New Crank vs. New Cassette

Hey BT, I was wondering what you all use for your crank/cassete combos. I'm thinking of either buying a new crank (I've considered a compact one) or a new cassette to increase my gear options. The deal is that I don't have enough gears for tough hills, so instead of spinning I'm having to mash the pedals at 60 or so rpms.

Any suggestions?
