A thread about bike speed got me thinking how I would do in a local TT. Phoenix held a 3 day Cycle event and day one was a 12 mile straight and flat out and back with around 1,000 Cat 1-5 riders. The cat 1 winner was right at 30mph and cat 2 was like 29mph. I would guess I would finish right at that 29 -30 mph range. I would think that the AG triathlete’s with top end bike splits would fair very well in these Time Trial races considering they average around that 26mph range for the 24-25 miles plus swimming and running yet.

Does anyone have experience racing TT's compared to tri's? Does one have to start in CAT 5 if it is their first race? I am sure there are some cyclist that would disagree with me.

Yes, you would start as a Cat 5 rider.  I am wondering why you think you would finish at the top of the Cat 1 & 2 times, though.  Those speeds require some real horsepower on the bike.  Not many "everyday" AGers would be able to match that.
Some top triathletes would do pretty well in bike TTs since that's esentiallythe riding that we do.  But you don't enjoy the same "legal" drafting benefits in a pure bike TT.  Go ahead and try one out.  It would be a good experience, for sure.

If you were an elite, then I'd agree with you possibly.

I'm one of the faster cyclists locally in tris (usually finish in the top 5 - 10% of the bike field with a few top 3 splits in smaller races) and I even usually finish somewhere in the middle/front of the Cat. 5 field in a cycling TT.  It's a different world.

I would guess you would not be anywhere close to 29 myself .........

I don't know, Rick, Trevor is a fast cyclist! Last September at Nathan's Tempe Olympic race he out split me by 1:25 on the bike and was only :25 behind local pro Louis Elliot. We were the 3 top bike splits in a race of 449 male competitors. But I do agree, Trev, that a 28-29 mph average pace even on a flat course is a bit beyond us. Maybe you could get to 27 or close to it.
