Subject: Nutrition for EARLY races
Ok...so I know that "early" is a relative term, but for me, in my job and being a grad student, I usually eat me first meal at 8:30am. I see that my first race is at 8:30am - stupendous. There's also a 5K this weekend, that I'd thought I would use in a brick workout, and it's at 8:00am. So, in efforts to fuel up, 2-3 hours prior is what I've seen as the recommendation for pre-race meals. What do you do? Do you get up 2-3 hours early to eat and stay awake? This may seem like a silly question, but yowsers, that'd be early for me.

thanks,

ryan

For a 5K? Eat a decent meal the night before, sleep in, maybe have a cliff bar on the way to the race. Don't sweat nutrition needs on something this short.

well, I was wanting to bike 30-45 minutes before running the 5k. Would you recommend the same thing - eat big the night before and maybe a bar before the race?

thanks!

I disagree with the eat big the night before.  Eat normally, so that you're not feeling stuffed.  I'd eat something the moment you get up.  Clif Bar is a good choice or anything else that's going to give you around 300 to 500 calories.  After your bike ride, and right before your 5K take a gel.  That should do you fine.

When you get to doing a triathlon you'll want to adhere to the 3 hour rule.  Some people wake up, eat, and go back to sleep.  I don't find it difficult since I'm one of these neurotic people who likes to be at the race venue 1.5 hours ahead of time.  So to do that, I need to get up early enough so that I can eat, load up the car, and drive to the race.

Yeah, I didn't say eat big, I said eat decent.

Word of caution, I wouldn't try any of this (cliff bar, gel) on race day unless you've tried it in training first. Gels particularly don't sit well with people the first time. Really, your body has more than enough energy stores (glycogen) to get you through your bike ride and your 5K (even a sprint triathlon, for that matter).

thanks, I think I'll try the bar and then the gels. I've used gels from time to time in my training and they work great, no problems with the stomach.

as with all of this, llive and learn is the best way to find out!
