Subject: Waterproof Garmin Forerunner 310XT coming out

I was just on the Garmin website looking for some information about my FR305 and look what I saw coming out "2nd Quarter"

https://buy.garmin.com/shop/shop.do?cID=142&pID=27335#

Kind of wish I needed a new watch.  I can't wait to read the reviews.

Let me know when someone gets one of these things and puts it to use.

I have heard about this new garmin too.  I am unsure about the "swimming" features.. Does anyone know exactly what it tracks in the water??? Will GPS work in water? how about HR in water?

I've been waiting for this thing to come out for a month now.  I don't have an HRM at all and want to pull the trigger on one but have been telling myself to wait for this as opposed to picking up the 305 now.

I heard the battery life is going to be about 20hrs.  We'll see in the real world if that's true.

If the GPS doesn't work well in the water, it is really going to be some horrible PR for Garmin.  Someone is getting fired.  You can't ruin the branding of what the Forerunner 305 has done for them in the Tri segment by releasing a new model that totes effectiveness in the water and then bombs.

Any thoughts on this guys?  Should I just shut up and take the sale on the 305 and not waste money on the new model?

Really, I don't see where Garmin is toting effectiveness in the water. Here are a couple quotes from the above link:

The rugged Forerunner 310XT is the triathlete's indispensable training tool — a GPS-enabled, swim-proof trainer that tracks bike and run data and sends it wirelessly to your computer.

Doesn't say "tracks swim, bike and run data."

Time Your Swim

Nothing about GPS data or course tracking on the swim.

I've heard other comments where Garmin downplays the use of the GPS feature in the swim. Can you find any ads or press releases where the company "totes effectiveness in the water "?

If you want a GPS/HR watch that you can swim with, hold out for the 310XT. If you want one that has an effective GPS in the swim, you'll have to wait a whole lot longer, so go with the 305.

Concur with The Bear's comments. From reviews and research it doesn't look like the key feature of the 310XT is going to be mapping/distance tracking in water, but instead a) It's waterproof so can be worn the whole race to track total time. b) It's got enough battery time to be the sole device used for IM distances, which the 305 for the most part can't.

Bear, you are right.  The word of mouth and my happy ears led to that inference.  I've talked to a few people about it who were excited about it and had the wrong idea, but when you read the description it states pretty clearly what it does do.

Makes my decision to wait for it alot more difficult.

Edit:  Maybe not that difficult.  I just pulled the trigger on the 305 online.

My Suunto T6C has GPS and is waterproof. Yet you need to have an upgraded heart rate monitor strap on to collect the heart rate, etc in the water.
