Subject: RE: Waterproof Garmin Forerunner 310XT coming out acumenjay - 2009-05-06 3:29 PM I've been waiting for this thing to come out for a month now. I don't have an HRM at all and want to pull the trigger on one but have been telling myself to wait for this as opposed to picking up the 305 now.
I heard the battery life is going to be about 20hrs. We'll see in the real world if that's true. If the GPS doesn't work well in the water, it is really going to be some horrible PR for Garmin. Someone is getting fired. You can't ruin the branding of what the Forerunner 305 has done for them in the Tri segment by releasing a new model that totes effectiveness in the water and then bombs.
Any thoughts on this guys? Should I just shut up and take the sale on the 305 and not waste money on the new model? Really, I don't see where Garmin is toting effectiveness in the water. Here are a couple quotes from the above link: The rugged Forerunner 310XT is the triathlete's indispensable training tool — a GPS-enabled, swim-proof trainer that tracks bike and run data and sends it wirelessly to your computer.
Doesn't say "tracks swim, bike and run data." Time Your Swim
Nothing about GPS data or course tracking on the swim. I've heard other comments where Garmin downplays the use of the GPS feature in the swim. Can you find any ads or press releases where the company "totes effectiveness in the water "? If you want a GPS/HR watch that you can swim with, hold out for the 310XT. If you want one that has an effective GPS in the swim, you'll have to wait a whole lot longer, so go with the 305.
