Subject: Who's up for a century ride?

Calling all Ohio BT riders:

Anyone up for either a 56 or 112 mile bike ride on Saturday, May 23?

I’m feeling the need for a long bike ride this month. Last year two riding friends and I completed a self supported century in the Alum Creek area. I’m going to do another this year on the 23rd (rain date will be the 24th). I’m thinking about meeting at the Alum Creek beach lot about 7:30am and getting started at 8am, sharp. We’ll complete two 56 mile laps of the Fat Rabbit HIM race course. You can do one lap or two.

THIS IS A SELF SUPPORTED CENTURY RIDE. THERE WILL BE NO PLACE TO STOP AND GET WATER OR NUTRITION. YOU MUST CARRY ALL YOU NEED WITH YOU FOR EACH LOOP. IF YOU PLAN ON TWO LOOPS PLAN ACCORDINGLY AND KEEP EXTRA WATER AND SNACKS IN YOUR CAR.

This is a training ride, not a bike trip or sightseeing tour. Everyone is invited but don’t bring your friend who “thinks” he’ll be able to make the distance. He won’t have a good time. That being said, the pace will not be sizzling. Plan on 15-16 MPH average WITH STOPPING FOR TRAFFIC SIGNALS  INCLUDED IN THIS AVERAGE. At times the pace may increase to over 20 MPH. Expect to complete the first loop in 3:30 to 3:45 hours.

After the first 56 miles we will stop back at the parking lot for 15-20 minutes to allow for refilling of water bottles and a bathroom break.

Should you get a flat or have a mechanical problem be prepared to fix it on your own. I cannot guarantee that you will not be left behind. We won’t purposely crank the speed in order to drop someone, however. The course loops back on itself in several places and you should be able to catch back up with the group.

I know I come off kind of jerk-ish in this invite, but I want it to be clear that this is a training ride. I do not expect my training partners to wait for me on a ride like this if I get a flat. I expect them to go on and I’ll catch up with them later. Again, all are welcome but just be sure you can make the distance.

And to those who think this pace is too slow: I figure this will be a comfortable pace for the greatest amount of riders. If you’re looking to go faster that’s fine, go on out ahead, I won’t be personally offended.

Here is a map of the course.

you have my interest.

on a side note, are you set on the course? if not it might be fun to ride from there out here to my houseand back, would take us north long the river to prospect and then over to my house, all on country roads with very little traffic.

either way, as long as my girls dont make nationals i'll come.

I am very interested in doing this. I will have to get a long ride in before to decide if I want to do 1 or 2 laps.

Newbz, I sent you a PM. If we get alot of intrest I think we should stick to the Fat Rabbit course. There are plenty of places where slower riders or those with flats can skip part of the course and catch back up with the group several miles later. I think at the fartherst away point we will only be about 20 miles from the cars should someone need to bail early. If it turns out to be just two or three strong riders I have no problem amending the course. But let's wait and make that call a few days before the ride.

I'll be rooting against your girls.

i was thinking about it/read your PM, lets stick with that for this ride, can swing out here from worthington and make it an even 90 some other time.

on a side note they have not lsot a single race this season and am going to try and qualify for nationals in a varsity race (they are novice, which means under 2 seasons of rowing). my all of the girls in my boat are 14, learned how to row this year, and are beating most of the ohio varsity teams:-D

I may be interested in this ride as well. I have told a buddy of mine about who lives in that area and he is interested too. I may end up only doing one loop, but my buddy will probably do the whole thing. I'm leaving tomorrow for a 250 mile bike ride (Police Unity Tour), which starts in Virginia and ends in Washington, D.C. The ride is over a 3 day period, so I will see how that goes before I decide for sure on the one lap or 2. I'll keep tabs on this post to get updated info.

Your killing me!  I"ll be at the local scifi con downtown Columbus during this ride.

While I can't ride that distance, I do live on 36 and for future rides, I am willing to run support- water, nutrition, ect for others.  Keep me in the loop David!

The loop is here. This is all the info I have and won't really be posting anymore except who will be riding that day. That list will go up a day or two before the 23rd.

Enjoy the si-fi convention, dork. Now if you will all excuse me, The Wrath of Kahn is on TV.

KAAAAAAHHHHHHHNNNNNN!

Great! Justin, it'll be great to see you again. I don't think I've seen you since the buckeye challenge last August.

Newbz, I'll assume your team didn't make Nationals. That sucks.

david,

my boat is the novice team (in rowing you row novice for two seasons then move up to varsity).

novice boats are MUCH slower due to not kowing how to row, fitness not being there, etc. normally about a min over 2000m. (6-9 min race dpeending on race conditions).

my girls won midwest champs i nthe nov race, and made it 6th overall i nthe varsity race, so they beat over 3/4ths of the midwest varsity teams in their first season, not quiet nationals but very close.

Great Leaping Lepra Conn. Welcome to BT. Tell us a little about yourself.

I rode 60 yesterday. I had a pretty fair headwind for half the time but still managed a 19.1 MPH average. (It was that tail wind that I also had half the time. And my aero helmet.) We won't be going that fast on Saturday.

So far we've got:

Me, newbz, JChristoff and Leaping. Anyone else?

Nice job on your ride yesterday David. That is a great ave speed for 60 miles. How do you like your new helmet?

I plan on going with you guys also. After the first loop I will decide if I am up for another one or not.

is where anywhere to stop for water along the way?

i can only carry two bottles (will refilafter first loop), and would like to pick up one along the way, will give me a chance to see how legs hold up riding faster trying to catch you guys;-)

Nope. The only place that might have water for sale is about 10 miles into the loop. It's a bait shop on Cheshire I think.

Hey Guys,

I'm in for the ride and I could have one or two more show, if that's okay. This is my first post, I've been a BT "lurker" for some time. Live in the Dublin area. Look forward to meeting you all on Saturday.

Looking at the Map the best option will be in the town of Kilbourne which is at the intersection of 521 and Old State Rd. There is a carry out and a pizza place. They are a little west (right) on 521, like 250ft or less. I don't think that they will be open that early... but we can hope they have a vending machine outside.

OK, six confirmed. Me, newbz, JChristoff, Kieth, Trihusker and Leaping. We'll meet in the beach lot. I'll be there about 7:30 in an older, black Dodge Dakota. I'll be in one of the first parking lanes by the side bathroom. We'll leave at 8am sharp. Bring your own map of the course. I won't have extras. See you all on Saturday.
