I will be on travel in Orange County, Southern California, in a few weeks. I'm not crazy of hotel stationary bikes, and there are worst places than Southern California to bike! I am wondering if I can rent a road bike for one day or two? Any idea if this can be done?

There are not many places willing to rent road bikes so I don't know how much luck you'll have.  But you will probably be able to rent a mountain bike--better than a stationary!

Don't know anything about bike rentals, but what about a real gym instead of the hotel gym? I live in Los Angeles and go to school in Orange County and am a member of LA fitness. You can always get a free pass at this gym, you'll have to go through the tour of the gym, and I believe you'll need a local address (you can make it up and just say you are moving here), but I think the pass is good for at least 1 week free.

If you are serious about doing this (PM me), I don't mind asking one of these days what is involved. I think you just have to call in and say you are interested, but to save you a long distance phone call, I don't mind asking you for.

I called a few bike shops in a town to which I am traveling and most said no. One store said I culd "buy" one, any one, and then "return it" less a 20% restocking fee after one week. Then they would resell as used. hmmm. not yet sure how I feel about that but it could be cheaper than shipping a bike...

Since I am a YMCA member here in Canada, I will actually go to the local Y to find a proper pool since hotel pools are usually quite short. I guess I could bike at the Y also. When I go to SC, I try to train outdoors and enjoy the nice weather, usually around Huntington Beach (lived there for 1 yr). I actually run on the path near the ocean when in Huntington Beach.

I'll try to see if I can rent a mountain bike then.

Thanks a lot for all the info.
