I believe this was a race that was planned by the Kansas 70.3 organizers, but was scrapped earlier in the year to avoid direct competition with KLM's Midwest Mayhem race.

According to their web site Mayhem is scheduled for July 19 this year.

I also found this little gem: NEW FOR 2009! We will no longer be conducting Awards Ceremonies at the end of each event.
Excellent move, KLM!

Unbelievable!

My PSA follows:

ATTN NE KANSAS/NW MISSOURI ATHLETES.  DO NOT GIVE YOUR HARD EARNED MONEY TO KLM.  BOYCOTT THEIR RACES AND THEY WILL EVENTUALLY HAVE TO GO AWAY.  THERE ARE TOO MANY OTHERS WHO CARE ABOUT THIS SPORT WILLING TO STEP IN AND TAKE THESE RACES OVER.  KLM HAS PROVEN OVER THE YEARS THEY DO NOT GIVE A DAMN ABOUT THE ATHLETES AND ARE ONLY OUT TO MAKE A BUCK.  PLEASE SPREAD THE WORD. STAY AWAY FROM KLM EVENTS!!!!!  THERE HAVE BEEN SEVERAL NEW RACES ADDED TO THE CALENDAR THIS YEAR FROM REPUTABLE RACE DIRECTORS WHO CARE NOT ONLY ABOUT THE ATHLETES BUT THE SPORT IN GENERAL.

Yep, I agree. Don't think I will race any of their races this year.

KLM is a race management company that runs the following races:

Topeka Tinman - June 20
Midwest Mayhem - July 19
Jackson County Tri - August 23
Midwest Meltdown - August 30

I have done many of their races and while I certainly don't want to see ANY local triathlons fail, I have consistently had sub-par experiences with this race organization, as have every triathlete I've spoken to. I would just advise to not be surprised if something within control of the race management goes horribly wrong (like timing mats malfunctioning for 30 minutes, blatant podium/awards errors, mis-marking the bike course causing dozens of people to DQ, extreme lack of volunteers, apathy in regards to athlete suggestions/complaints).

This year I am supporting non-KLM races... thank goodness another race organization has stepped up to the plate to put on quality triathlons in this area!

What other races do you recommend for a newcomer?

I would highly recommend Kansas City Traithlon, sprint distance, Shawnee Mission short course too. SM is a little hilly on the bike course but a beautifull venue and closed to vehicles, well run race. Than check Ultramax for their races here localy. These guys are good at putting races together.

x2!

Or come to Wichita and do The Mudwater (sprint) on July 19 - small race capped at 250 - FLAT bike course. It's awesome!
