Alpharetta, GA | Subject: Most creative thing you've gone to get your training in Hi folks, Just curious what the craziest things you've done to get your training in. For me I once took a 3 hour conference call while riding my bike (on a bike trail, not roads). Told everyone on the phone I was drive in my car (wind noise). I just used a Jabra earpiece which has the mic built into the earpiece abd kept my phone on mute when not talking. Worked great, but it was kind of hard paying attention as conference call do get boring. Edited by bschulte 2009-05-28 10:19 AM |

I can't even reply with anything that can come close to touching that. I have thought about riding the trainer while listening to a call, but haven't even done that..... yet. |

Extreme Veteran 418 Pittsburgh | Subject: RE: Most creative thing you've gone to get your training in That is both hilarious and a bit disturbing, lol... I can't even begin to touch it. The only thing I do is my handy commuting trick -- I use my bike commute as a short training ride (I do cadence work, sometimes a few sprints, etc. on the bike), make an extra little loop to the bike locker I rent, put on running shoes which I keep in the bike locker, then run before going up to my work. Thank god for the showers on my floor! |

Science Nerd 28760 Redwood City, California | Subject: RE: Most creative thing you've gone to get your training in I set up experiments in the lab and go to the pool or the gym during the two hour incubation time. Then I go back to work and finish. Once I ran too long and had to come back in wearing my running clothes and shoes. At least it was after hours, so no one else was around. |

Veteran 193 Bridgewater MA | Subject: RE: Most creative thing you've gone to get your training in There is a track near my office. So, on some nice days I will bring a change of clothes and right before lunch put shorts and t-shirt on under normal work attire. Head over to track at lunch, do some running. Towel off, sometimes a little cologne, and change shirt. Put pants back on over shorts to go back to work. Once back at work, head into bathroom to complete the clothes change-over (taking off shorts). Then, turn on fans at my desk to try and cool down. At least nobody ever really needs to see me. Most of my day is on the computer and conf calls. |

Veteran 143 Longview | Subject: RE: Most creative thing you've gone to get your training in We had to meet the in-laws for dinner in another town. I had my wife bring a change of clothes and I took off an hour or so early and met them there. I have had the neighbor take my son to baseball practice while I ran there. I then had to catch a ride back home for both me and my son. My neighbor and I are good friends though so it wasn't too weird. In a couple of weeks we are heading to Florida for vacation and I plan to leave really early on my bike and have my wife pick leave later and pick me up a couple of hours later. As I have written this it is starting to sound a little off but I had to make a point to not let life become an excuse for not getting workouts in. |

Extreme Veteran 542 Pauls Valley, OK | Subject: RE: Most creative thing you've gone to get your training in I will get my running in while at work. I grow tree seedlings for the forestry service. We have 12 fields that have a perimeter of about 1/2 mile. I will walk out to the fields to "check on the crop". I then proceed to run around each field to get a good look at everything. I can get in a good 6 mile cross country run, or do 6 x 1/2 mile repeats with a 1/2 mile walk/jog in between each one. My crew thinks I am crazy and will always stop and ask if I need a ride somewhere. I am also responsible for irrigation. Our irrigation lines are turned on by hand and must always have 5-7 lines running (no more and no less). If I am switching the irrigation from one field to another that are 1/4 mile apart, I'll do the travelling on foot. In this manner I can get 6 x 1/4 mile repeats in everytime I change fields. |

Lafayette, CO | Subject: RE: Most creative thing you've gone to get your training in Get laid off. All the time you need for training then. The only problem is money so make sure you're set up to handle that side until you can find another job. Seriously, I'm not happy to be unemployed but I've gotten in some great workouts in the 2 weeks since it happened. |

Extreme Veteran 3177 | Subject: RE: Most creative thing you've gone to get your training in I have not had to do anything crazy like that yet but my Brother-in-law does some interesting things. For instance during the summer on Vacations we go out with him waterskiing. He will often stop driving the boat in the middle of it, and go sit up front taking a conference call while we continue to waterskii or just sit sunning and drinking beer. Then he finishes the call and hops back to driving or skiing. He said he got some funny questions when they heard people wipping out in the background. |

Champion 19812 MA | Subject: RE: Most creative thing you've gone to get your training in When not enough cars at home, son drove to work, I ran to where he worked, picked up the car to drive girls to soccer practice then picked him up after work. Brought trainer to soccer game to do workouts while daughter's played. I used to do a 50' ride during a 60' lunch break, changed quickly, rode, in the women's bathroom they had a small room with a sink that I would wipe off, wash my hair, change and be back to my desk. I loved those days..my quickie little rides...co workers thought I was nuts as I did it often during the winter. It is all about scheduling and fitting it in. My life with primary driver for kids events my day is often chopped up so I'll train from xxx while kids are doing yyy. My daughters have a soccer tournament with 4 games for each team at U Mass Amherst Sunday and I just checked to see if I could use the pool during one of the down times but it is closed for break..drat! Veteran 187 Northern Virginia | Subject: RE: Most creative thing you've gone to get your training in Yesterday I dropped off the kid at daycare. Left car there and ran home 4 miles. Worked from home. Road bike back to car. Picked up kid. I have also run during lunch and once ran to pick up the car at the shop rather then waiting for a ride. |

Master 1696 Surprise, Arizona | Subject: RE: Most creative thing you've gone to get your training in 1) I routinely set my PC up next to the trainer so I can see any e-mails or IMs that come in while I am riding. 2) I have stopped mid run to join short conference calls. 3) I have kept a pager poolside and stopped every 500 yards to check it. 4) I have taken sink showers/spongebaths at the office after a midday run or ride. 5) I have done a wetsuit swim at a casino/hotel pool. 6) I have done 'laps' in a different hotel pool (a see and be seen type of pool), comlete with goggles - my wife was mortified. I do whatever I can to keep training on track. Since I can't bring talent or natural ability to the table, I try to at least offer consistency. |

Master 1384 Brooklyn, NY | Subject: RE: Most creative thing you've gone to get your training in - Diddo on the conf. call while on trainer but not on road....yet (I though I was the only desparate nut job doing this kind of stuff) - Laps at a pool 2 blocks away instead of lunch (eat afterwards while typing...on this site instead of work) - Drop family off at any BBQ's then go for my long runs or rides (my wife hates that) - Trailer the kids on short bike rides in a park with a 1mi loop - Push my kids on jogger (but not on long runs...yet) - Use the trianer while helping oldest with her home work - Use my kids as added tension while doing abs or stretches. They think they're simply stretching Daddy, helping get taller/stronger - Made a tall bar stool-like table out of lumber for my laptop so I can do work while on the trainer (then switch between windows as I watch any Tour de... DVD at the same time) |

Member 62 Portland, OR | Subject: RE: Most creative thing you've gone to get your training in My building has a small locker room/utility closet. About once a week I run down, change and run 1 mile to the pool. Swim 1000 yards and run back to the office to change. |

Veteran 250 Maine | Subject: RE: Most creative thing you've gone to get your training in I really hate using a trainer and will ride in almost any condition to avoid it (2 hours ride in 16 degree weather) but when I absolutely have to, I will play Call of Duty 4 online to help pass the time. I wear my HR monitor so I will not slack off. I just lean my elbows on the aerobars and hold out the controller out in front of me. Last year for swim training I would run 1 mile to the ocean (mariner) and swim for 45 minutes during my lunch break and then run back. We have showers here which makes it doable. It doesn't smell all that great due to the fishing boats and it's usually covered in sea weed. Do what you have to do! |

Champion 7547 Albuquerque, New Mexico | Subject: RE: Most creative thing you've gone to get your training in I've "run" errands. Friend wanted to borrow the woodburner (pencil type) so I offered to run it by. Carried it in my hand the 5 miles to her house. Got the "confirmed headcase" look when I showed up in running gear (mid-winter). Got a 16-mile run in dropping keys off for someone, and I've "run" lunch to my sons. |

Elite 3683 Whispering Pines, North Carolina | Subject: RE: Most creative thing you've gone to get your training in When out in AZ, I biked up to a lake (25 miles up a mountain) and met my family there for a nice day of picnics, fishing, and playing in the lake. Other than that, I just wake up early to work out and go during lunch. not really creative, but definitely more efficient. |

Sensei Sin City | Subject: RE: Most creative thing you've gone to get your training in Probably ride the worst P.O.S trainer at a hotel once. It was probably from the 70's and the seat couldn't get high enough... Needless to say, I actually cut the workout short, but I got SOME of it in! |

Veteran 465 Michigan | Subject: RE: Most creative thing you've gone to get your training in I run to almost all of my kids' sporting practices and games. My DH takes the kids and I meet them there. Some of the high-maintenance moms give me funny looks when I show up in my running clothes but I just smile at them. I also squeeze runs in during lunch time or between conference calls. Since I work from home, no one can smell me! However, most of my training time is 5:30-7am before the family wakes up. |

Master 1695 STL | Subject: RE: Most creative thing you've gone to get your training in *get up at 3:30am to get my workout in *set up the trainer at a park/outside while the kids play *in the winter, my kids put on "america's got talent" shows while I ride and am the judge * take kids to track while I do track work *swim while kids are swimming ("if you let me do my workout, you'll get to swim longer because I won't get so bored") *bike/run to games nothing too creative, but people still think I'm crazy! I really try to get it all in before they wake up, but now that it's summer it's hard because i'm off (and have more to get in) so I usually split it. Edited by goobergirl98 2009-05-28 4:07 PM |

Regular 87 Beaumont | Subject: RE: Most creative thing you've gone to get your training in The craziest thing so far is probably just waking up at 3am and going for a 90 minute run before meeting my first client at the gym at 5am. This way, I never have to let them get away the "Its so early, I am to tired to work out" excuse. I simply let them that I have already ran 10 miles and dont have time for excuses. They usually pick up the pace! Also, my family frequently has get togethers at a local lake and I always get strange looks when I show up for a party with my wetsuit. But my beer always taste better than theirs after a long OWS! |
