Sounds like a poor wheel build. Probably wasn't stress relieved and tensioned properly. Were these hand built or off the shelf machine built? If machine built, they save time on the line by winding up the spokes and shipping. When you hand build, you stop periodically and stress relieve the spokes by placing the hub on the bench and pushing down on the rim. Flip the wheel and repeat. This allows the spokes to unwind: They can twist up as you tighten. Also, it allows the crossing points to establish an equilibrium.

You need a wheel rebuild as this is a sign of poor construction. You should be able to get by reusing the same hub and rim (assuming the rim is true and round), but re-spoke the wheel.

My SO kept breaking spokes on his front wheel and suspected that he was too heavy for it. He gave the wheels to me because I'm lighter and I broke a front spoke (24 spoke wheel) going uphill in a race last Saturday. D'oh.

He's rebuilt them with DT Swiss spoke (hmm, now I don't remember if they are DT swiss or not) instead of CX Rays and hopes they will be better. So far so good, but I've only been for 4 rides on them and only 3/4 were hilly.

Sorry, maybe not the best advice, I'm just sharing my story.

If they are both machine built wheels, I would do them both at the same time since the bike will be down for a couple days anyway.

Great opportunity to learn to lace your own!

I'm riding a SS Mtn Bike front wheel that I built 2 years ago, still holding up great. Dishing is a little trickier, but the basics are the same. Fun, fun, fun!

It is a Raleigh so I would assume machine (came with the built bike)

That is what I was thinking (wheel rebuild).  Now to interview some folks to make sure it is done right and a fair price.

Does the rear get more stress than the front or should I just have both done at the same time to save future problems?

Yeah, the weight distribution is something like 65/35 rear/front. So the rear wheel definately takes more abuse than the front. But that front wheel is likely made poorly as well. Get them both done. Most shops are ~$1/spoke and $75/wheel for labor. Seeing you can reuse the rims and hubs, it's worth it getting 10 years out of this build.
