You also do not have the push off from the wall every 25 yds now. It's every 50m. That'll slow you down as well.

I am also EXTREMELY hairy from head to toe. I have been shaving it all once a week, but then a few weeks ago right around when I started at the 50m pool I stopped as my mental prep for an upcoming race - shave a few days before and feel like superman. Does shaving make THAT much of a difference that it would be making me 10-15 seconds slower per 100?

Can't answer the rest of your question (fewer wall pushes would be 1 factor, but still seems like too much if both pools are accurately measured).  But the answer to this part is absolutely not.  Not even 1 second.

i would think it was very little to do with your hairy body and much more to do with the push off.

what are your stoke counts per 25 yards?  what are your strokes per 50 M?

ding, ding, ding.

This is the difference.  Your stroke count is likely higher per 100.  I know my stroke count is typically around 80 in a 25y pool.  Last summer, I swam in a 50m and it was closer to mid-90s.  Some of that is yards to meters, but most of it was losing that nice glide from the push off.  Unless you are an extremely efficient swimmer this will slow you down.

Don't get discouraged by this change.  Keep pushing through the workouts.  The results will show on race day.

I am really puzzled by it. You don't think the hair is doing it? I am really, really nastily hairy, like a sweater from head to toe.

No.  At most, shaving only makes a few hundredths to possibly a few tenths of a second difference per 100.

Just a obervation. I noticed that people who train in  25 yard pools  and are decent swimmers go to a race where is  a 25m pool or 50m or OW in meters they do not do so well time wise. I am not sure because it endurance. Now this might not  be true and I saw a few results and talked to poeple  who train in 25yard pool and then going to a meter pool or OW in meter find it harder. Just an observation and  a few chats to people I swim with.

In a 25 yard pool your arms get a short rest for a few seconds every length, plus an extra burst of speed at the wall push off so you're going fast but not working as hard.  In a 50 meter pool you're going more than double the distance without that rest, and without that extra burst of speed and corresponding momentum off the wall, so you end up going slower than 1.09 times your yard time.

I raced once in a 50 meter pool without ever having practiced in one.  I couldn't believe how much harder it felt!

Some swimmers with particularly fast turns and push outs are more competitive in 25 yd pools than in 50 meters because they have more opportunities to take advantage of this strength.  Some good pool swimmers aren't all that great in open water, but I think that has more to do with desire and willingness to adapt to a new and bizarre swimming environment.

Not to discount the benefit of the push off the wall, but you also have to take into consideration that for each turn, you are slowing down, stopping, then going the opposite direction. IF  you are not a fast flip-turner, I can easily see 1" of essentially being stopped (thinking about my flip turns).

I have a real hard time believing you can gain 5"  because you get to come to a stop, flip, and then push off the wall. To have the times that far off, I think there is something else here in play.

I think your conversion of adding about 10s from yards to meters would work just fine if you went from 25yrd ---> 25 meters... However, as a bunch of folks stated... 50 meters doesn’t give your arms much rest.   If there are any flaws in your stroke, strength, DPS efficiency they are going to be more prominent with less rest for your arms.  Believe it or not that extra push off the wall gives you just enough time to "reset" and get going again.  It's a tough transition for some to go from 25 yards to 50 meters.  Keep at it.

I swim in 2 different pools. Mondays, Wednesday, and some fridays I swim in a 50m pool. Tuesdays and thursdays in a 25 yard pool (master's class). I attribute the big difference in speeds to the push off the wall. I guess the very short rest that your arms get is something to consider, too.

good luck

As a distance swimmer, I've always loved training in 50 meter pools when I can. As for your relative time differences. They are not important. Take your new times and work from them as a new baseline. Why do you appear to swim slower? Could be lots of things. You have a phenomenal push off in a 25 yard pool, your stroke breaks down halfway down the 50 meter pool, you lose mental focus easier in a 50 meter pool, your rhythm is tied to turning every 25 yards and needs to adapt, there is more water in a 50 meter pool so there is more to push out of your way - Ok so that's not it, but you get the idea. It could be one or more of a lot of things. Just focus on your workouts and adjust the intervals so that you have an equivalent amount of rest.
