I am doing Alcatraz in a couple weeks, and was planning to buy a neoprene swim cap.  Why?  Not sure...  Maybe just being a lemming.

I feel like I'm pretty cool (no pun intended) with cold water and wonder about the actual need for a special cap and maybe I could save the 20 bucks plus shipping.

So, those that know about swimming in 60 degree water, is the neoprene cap needed, or just a luxury in your opinion?

The first OWS of season around here is typically in 53-55* water.  I have used a squid lid in these practices and found that my head is able to reheat and the cold induced headache able to subside quicker.  That said, it is still @#$^% cold when the water hits you.

The draw back that I found is that I did not like having my ears covered and sound muffled.  Other than than, it was pretty much worth the $20 investment.

Jim, everyone has different tolerances to cold.  I bought a neoprene swim cap last year (maybe the year before), I wore it once, two weeks ago.  That's it for this year.   I've swam Alcatraz twice, two swim caps, no problems... for me.  But I am used to swimming in cold water.

That said, the majority of heat loss occurs through the head.

Just double bag your head and you'll be fine. surely you have plenty of extra caps.

Of course I've been known to swim in Lake Mead at 58 F with no wet suit, so you might not want to take my advice.

I'm doing the race too, coming from Texas. I went ahead and purchased a cap today. I figure the $20 is worth it if it makes me slightly more comfortable.

I swam today in water in the mid 50's, nothing but my almost bald head.  It was cold and I knew it.  I hear other guys up north here, just double bag thier heads.  I think $20 is not alot to take the chance on screwing up your race with a cold head.

Bought and used one last year at SOR HIM - 55F water temp. Aside from looking like an oompa loompa, according to a "friend", I had no "freeze headaches" or other discomfort. What can it hurt to drop the $20 and probably be a bit warmer, aside from the oompa loompa thing...?

Most swimmers in that event use two caps . The race cap outside and a another inside. Keeping the head warm allows some people to swim in pretty cold water even with no wetsuit. Theres locals in SF that do that all the time and swim back and forth to Alcatraz.

For some cold water swim cap ideas see

Ear plugs are also a must in cold water. Macks are a favorite with many

What ever you go with train with before the Alcatraz event so theres no surprises.

I swim in water that is usually in the low 50's and I just wear two swim caps. Never tried an insulated swim cap, but I'm not against the idea, just never felt that it was cold enough to need to get one.

Make sure you try a few on before ordering one--I borrowed one to swim in SF Bay in March (and was thankful for it).  I think it was Orca and had a velcro strap under the chin. I tried a few others on that were not velcro and none of them fit right or covered my ears right, so I didn't buy one and returned the borrowed one to its owner.  Since then, I've just worn two caps in cold water and been fine.  Booties, on the other hand, have been very nice to own.

If you don't have a lot of experience with cold water and you are asking yourself this question, you should get one. If nothing else it will assist you in your mental preparation. If you are doing Escape, you've already spent so much money, another $20 -$25 is worth the extra peace of mind. The next time ditch it if you want, and sell it for $10 - $15. There will be enough people wearing one at Alcatraz that you'll have plenty of company.

I bought the Blue Seventy cap for Alcatraz. It was tight when I first put it on. But in the water it fit perfectly. I read ear plugs were also recommended for the race. I tried the Mack's silicone (blue twisty look) but they dont' really fit that well. I'm going to try out another pair this week.
