I have heard alot of people riding out to Lake Geneva and back and was wondering what route you take where I will not be killed. I am in the Crystal Lake area.

Glad you posted this question, as I've been wondering the same thing...only I'm quite a bit further south than you, so would probably need to load up the bikes in the car and drive to a more northerly starting point.

I found a route on this site under route search but need to look closer to see if I can figure out what roads the guy rode on.

The easiest way...

Go up to Hebron thru Bull Valley... get to Queen Ann road, and ride it north all the way to Hebron. We then cut over and stop at the gas station by the basketball.

Then we go a couple of yards further north, and turn left immediately on Hebron road. Follow Hebron Road until you get to the ix of Hebron and Johnson road. Turn RIGHT. Take that road... Northward... and... actually, I don't know the names of the roads anymore... Check a map... Look for Gasch, Stateline, Hillside. Those are the roads right over the border. Then we turn R, and (this past Sunday, anyway) we headed around the lake, going thru the BigFoot area first. Grandview is a Street I saw yesterday as well...

Wind around 50, turn left at your first opportunity on the N end of the Lake, off Route 50, and that's Snake Road... hilly. Follow that thru some neighborhoods... and you will ultimately be spit out again around Route 50. Then you'll wind up near Williams Bay... then Fontana... we have a route we do thru Fontana, that will put you out on a main road again, and across some rail road tracks, and then you will be on your way back.

I understand this is very very non specific... but check a map... and it should all sorta come together. Maybe I will try to map the route we took yesterday and upload it. Let me know if you have other questions!

Question on your route, Whizzz...is 50 a relatively "safe" road to ride on?  Is there a wide enough shoulder?  My memory of 50 from my riding my motorcycle up there a lot, is that it's a pretty high-speed road with lots of traffic.  Not that I haven't ridden on roads like that before, but I was just asking out of curiosity.

The only riding on 50 is when it's in the town of Lake Geneva, and speed limit is 25 / 30.  Just west of town where it becomes a highway again, hang a left onto Snake Road.  That winds around for a bit, then you cross over 50 again to head down by Lake Delevan?  Ride along the shore there, then climb up through the Interlachen Condos to cross over 50 again.  Then wind through Williams Bay, and head up the main street climbing up to the observatory.  At the first left past the Observatory grounds, turn off and head along the roads through to Fontana ( the beach on the west side of the lake ).  Then you get back on Lakeshore and hit some rollers.

Couple options from there, but the easiest to follow is take Lakeshore to Academy, and climb up the hill.  Stay straight until you hit State Line road, hang a left and you'll end up back in Hebron.

You shouldn't be on any busy roads ( 47 or 50 ) during the ride.  If you are, you missed a turn.

I am riding up to Lake Geneva from Deerfield/HP area....I am going to use this thread as a starting pt for the ride.

Any other suggestions for routes?

Any feedback would be very much appreciated as I am very unfamiliar w the ride.

Also looking forward to Pleasent Prairie, legs have recovered from Steelhead and I am excited to get back out.   Forecast shows for 80 and 9mph wind, not bad at all

Thx

Jonathan
