Subject: Calories in X Calories out - Desperate

I have a problem.

I've started about 3 weeks ago swimming every day for about 1 hour, running for about 20 minutes 3x week and biking for about 1 hour 3x week. Also, I work 1 group of muscles per day...
Ex.: Mon - Chest, Tue - Back, Wed - Try etc...

I FREAKING GAINED 5 POUNDS... I cannot believe it.

I am 5.11, 225lbs, large shoulder built, large legs.

2 Years ago before I moved to OHIO, I was 164lbs.
Now I am back in Orlando FL and I can't get this wight off of me.

8am: I eat 12 grain bread and chicken breast(sliced) sandwich every morning
11am: Fruit
2pm: Chicken breast filet, Small portion of whole grain pasta or Rice and beans
5pm: Fruit
8pm: Salad and Chicken filet
11pm: Yogurt

I don't see how to cut anywhere else.

How do I know if I'm spending more than taking in?

Any tips???

first, is that all you are eating? were the weigh-ins at the same time of day? i know i am up and down 2-5 pounds per day on normal food/water flucuations, so i always weigh in when i wake up.

how much of these things are you eating, what goes into the salad?

for what its worth.

swimming 1000yards is apporx 250 cal for most people
biking at a mod pace, is approx 500 per hour
running is approx 100 per mile.

food wise if thats all you are eating, thats pretty good.
any juice, beer, add ons to the meals, etc? sports drink, pop, extra sauce, condiments, etc, all count.

finally, it will take a bit of time for your body to start burning through stuff, it wont happen over night, i know for myself, when i start back up working out full time it takes a few weeks to see much of a change.

Personally, I dont know that your eating enough, that is my own opinion.

Are you noticing a drop in body fat? It is common to see an increase in weight, while your body builds up muscle (if you havent trained in a while), and then drop weight once your body "catches up".

Also, are you taking any supplements?

the thing is, even with his cal that low/way under what he might need, he will drop some weight. his metabolism would slow down, but not stop. if he hs able to still keep training its still moving.

my guess is either he needs to weigh in on a consistent time basis (ie mornings), be using the same scale (this could be it right there), and/or give it a bit of time to start working.

I'm a big Ohio girl now living in Arizona!  5'11" 195 as of today!  I was having the same problem and frustration as you.  Exercising like crazy but not losing weight.  I looked through some threads and found a website called fitday.com  The website figures out how many calories you need each day and you set a goal weight.  They have you eat 1000-500 calories less each day.  You even load your exercise so you can see how much more you will have to eat to reach the level they want you at.  After logging my food intake I realized I was eating a lot less then I should be.

I am loving it so far.  I never really thought about it like that.  I guess I need a lot more calories every day then I thought.  Good luck!!

you do need to be eating enough.

that said, my thought, is that if your workouts are not suffering, you are not eating too little.

any type of physical activity will leave you wasted, be way harder, you wont recover, etc if you are in a huge deficit, and you will know it.

for me, if i am tryign to lose weight, and training, and workouts start to suffer, i know i have hit that point if nothing else has changed other than food.

Just as an example to the OP.

I am right now 151, 5'7'', and training around 2-3 hours most days.
without training, i am sitting on 2000 ish cal per day give or take a bit, and approx 2500-3000 on training days, and slowly losing weight (half pound per week range). with normal training (say 10 hours a week), at my weight, i need to be around 3000-3600 per day to not change weight.

you are eating about the about i do. so if you can still be working out, are sure thats all you are eating, i would check the scale, make sure its accurate, and start weighing in at the same time each day.

FWIW i got on the scale after breakfast this morning (cereal, milk, water and some electrolyte drink), and was up 3 pounds from yesterday morning.

for someone your size, 5 pounds is easily within day to daychanges.

What are the calories you are taking in each day? You gave us what you eat, but how many calories are in what you eat?

What is a small portion? Did you measure it out? Is it a cup? Or two cups? It's very easy to go over a serving size if you don't measure it.

Also, how many calories are you burning daily with the exercise you are doing?

If you are logging all of this, you know.

If you are not logging all of this, you need to start. Logging your food intake and how many calories you are burning is essential to losing weight. Especially if you aren't losing any.

I went to www.livestrong.com and The Daily Plate - to log all my food. A lot of people like logging their food there.

I lost weight by starting with a base and then adding 1/2 of what I burned exercising daily, and a 50% carb/25% fat/25% protein ratio. So I had a 1400 calorie base (I am 5'4" and started at 125 pounds) and if I burned 400 calories running, I would eat 1600 calories that day.

That worked let me tell you. Worked great! I got down to 117 pounds pretty quickly (in about 6 weeks time).

Like others said... swimming doesn't burn that many calories. Cycling, running and then swimming burn the most calories.

No extra food.
I drink water for the most part and on saturday I'll have pineapple juice.
Nothing extra. No supplements.

You're right.
I am not logging it.
Portions are 1 cup.
I was very fit 2 years ago, and it looks to me like my metabolism has just gone into a halt.

I don't feel like my food is affecting the training... as a matter of fact, when I train 30 min after a meal, I feel energized.

Log all your food. If you aren't losing weight, you gotta do it. Plain and simple.

Start logging your food. Give it a couple of weeks and see what happens. Just make sure your calorie base is where it needs to be and you aren't starving yourself. I also like the idea of adding 1/2 of what you burn exercising to your base... but some just go with a base and do that.

x2 with what everyone else said ... I too would question if you are eating enough ...

Is this every day? Or do your days vary? My main concern at this point is that you are not eating a varied diet ... and there's also not very many vegetables in there (one serving - your salad at supper but what's in that?) ... chicken is a great lean protein, but try to vary it up a bit ... salmon/fish, turkey, lean beef/bison, etc ... throw a hard-boiled egg on your salad instead of chicken ... and eat more vegetables. For lunch try having a protein with veggies instead of a protein with pasta. Snack on raw veggies in between meals.

And also remember - muscle weighs more than fat. As you increase muscle mass - your weight may reflect that. Going by how your clothes fit v.s. the numbers on the scale is sometimes the best way to judge your weight loss.

Awesome.

My salad usualy includes Lettuce, cherry tomatoes, brocolly, Green onions, carrots and the chicken breast.

I will change my diet to vegetable snacks during the day and keep training hard.

After a few weeks, I'll send everyone a message letting you guys know if it is working.

Thank you all again for your input.

Another week has gone by and I felt lighter today.

My pants are getting tighter in the legs and looser in the waist.

No weight change.

But my stomach area is visually flattening out...

Thanks everyone... I'll keep posting.

while this is true to an extent,

there is absolutly NO WAY that he can gain weight and be eating less than he is burning.

Yes fat will be used for fuel and converted to muscles, but this is not going to have him gaining weight, really.

When you begin a new exercise routine after being relatively sedintary your body will sometimes react in strange ways including retaining fluids.  I can gain or lose 3 to 4 lbs over the course of 24 hours even if I ate the exact same meals for 3 days straight.

X2 regarding vegitables.  I will try to consume at least 4 to 5 servings a day of high fiber vegitables (Lettuce, Green Beans, Broccoli, Cabbage, etc.).

Good luck and keep training, also keep paying attention to how your clothes fit.  Likely a bigger indicator of your progress than the scale.  I only weigh in on Monday (officially) the rest of the week I may weigh but I don't put to much stock in the numbers.  Monday morning is the only one that counts.

Alright my Friends...

IT looks like the Metabolism is finally kicking in....

This morning, the weight was tipped at 214lbs... That's a 9lbs loss in 1 week...

Unbelievable.

I love this program and all the feedback from everyone...

My goal was to shed 2lbs per week. But I've learned here that weight is not the most important thing. So I will keep going and trying on the old tight clothes...hehehe

Tks All.

Have you calculated your total calorie intake yet?  measuring and adding all things to include drinks and sauces applied to prepare the food?   If all you are eating is what was mentioned earlier in this post I would be shocked if that is enough food for you and your body has shut down.

Also something that happened to me was that I would lose more then the goal lbs in a week, so planned to lose 2 lbs and actually dropped 4.  Then I would stay steady for a couple of weeks and drop again.  But over the average I was dropping 2 lbs a week. So if you dropped 9 lbs in a week and you are maintaining that you are a couple of weeks ahead, or 4.5 wks worth of weight lose.  How long has this been the case?

Thanks Everybody...

SOrry for the delay... I was in my premed exam weeks... No time to do anything but study and workout a little.
I have taken everyone's advise and here's what I got:

I started on diet + Exercise full time again on 09/21/2009.
I weighed myself at 225bls to start again. (I know... I was back at 225... SUCH A BS.)

I started counting calories keeping it at 1200 or under and following the 13 week tri training + Brazilian Jiu Jitsu 3 times per week(Jiu Jitsu will burn calories like nothing else).

Anyway... I weighed myself on Monday 09/28/2009 again aaaaaand.... 219lbs.

I am mantaining the diet now at:
1200 cal Max
50% Carb
30% Protein
20% Fats

The best thing about this diet is that I eat a lot, mostly vegetables, but a lot and I always have energy.
My workouts are steady and Increasing in speed and power.

Thank you all for the help.

I will keep you posted as to my progress.

How did you arrive at 1200 calories as your target intake? At your current weight, that sounds pretty low to me.... You might be sending your body into "starvation mode", where it is desperately holding onto fat stores. You might do better increasing your calorie intake a bit.
