I'm starting to swim in the ocean every Saturday in Long Beach, CA but cannot get a straight answer as to the distance between lifeguard stations or beach bathrooms or anything else, from any city department or even the lifeguards

Does anyone know the 'standard' distance between lifeguard stations or any other way to figure out the distance you are swimming in the ocean.

Thanks.
Dave

There really isn't any "regulated" distance for any of that.  I would say your best bet is to do a "time trial" of sorts, swimming from one landmark to another and back again and see how long it takes.  You will see improvement just by whether or not this total time decreases as you progress.  Unless there is a road paralleling that section of beach that you can drive between the landmarks you may never really know for sure.

If you have access to one, get a laser sight. Hunter and army surplus shops probably carry them, but I just don't know if its worth the cost.

Only thing I can recommend is a GPS. Especially for open water swims, I've got a buddy in a kayak who'll take an empty milkcarton tied to a cinderblock a 1/4 mile from the dock.  Then its just a matter of remembering how many loops out and back you do.
