Subject: how many workouts a week?
I've found through trial and error that 9-10 workouts suit me better rather then 11 workouts including my marathon long runs on sunday, which leave me exhausted for the entire day.

Currently I am at 4 runs, 4 bikes, 3 swims and 2 strength. I have been skipping some bikes until the Ohio weather gets better (bad me). I am training for a marathon, so running takes precedent right now. Once I move to tri-training only, I will be alternating 3/4 workouts for run and bike.

For some reason, I am enjoying swimming more than all other excercise. I was gonig to the gym doing weights but it fell short to swimming, Is is just me, but i can swim 1000-1200 meters a day, but when it comes to running i can only run about 3/4 of a mile straight. Should I change anything? or does anyone have some sort of regimen?

As someone who has experienced several overuse and ortho injuries over the years I find that 6-7 workouts is all my body can handle. I usually try to do these workouts in 5 days with a couple of double days in order to give me 2 days off a week. I'm not a morning person and my job starts early so getting in a workout before work has been impossible for me...for some reason I just can't get up before 6 am! Hats off to all of you who do though!

I've been doing 8 per week, 3 strength and 5 cardio. On the strength days I will double up with a 'regular' CV day, one day a week is long, slow distance CV, as much as I can fit in. If I'm feeling bored with CV I'll do a fartlek day. I'm following Ilg's strength training program for adventure runners, and after not running for several years following an injury it hurts pretty good. My knee and hip joints are noticeably stronger after one month. I use a Concept II rowing ergometer for 3/5 of CV work until the end of this month, then running will take priority.

For a time, I was doing 12 per week but I am doing about half of that now. 3 runs, 2 bikes, 1 swim, and 1 yoga now with a bit of weights now and then but only minimally.

I'm at about 6-7 myself...I'm still trying to figure out how people can schedule 12! Wow.

two swim, two bike, three run....as running is my weakest sport.

3 Swims
3 Bikes
3 Runs
2 Weights
<1 Full day off>

11 Total Hmmmm..... never looked really looked at it that way.

I did long/slow training in all 3 from Jan through the first week of March.
Now for each sport I try to do one hard, one medium, one long/endurance per week.
I'm sore quite a bit. But it is a "good sore". :-)

I work out eight days (six days and twice on Tuesdays and Thursdays) a week and my rest day is ALWAYS Sunday. So that's:8 swims (I swim after EVERY workout. It's an addiction)6 runs (I try to run at least once a day. Sometimes I run twice on my two a days)4 bikes (I do spin class twice a week and try to bike twice other times).3 weightliftingFor 21 different work outs a week. Boy, I never really counted it up like that.

Holy cow! 21 workouts? I am a 7 a week person. Of course,if I count bricks as 2 workouts it goes up.

2 swims, 2/3 runs, 2/3 bikes.

sometimes is get in a little extra of something, like a bike cool down after a run, or a 10 minute run after stationary bike, but I still count that as one workout session.

I'm doing the same as LJSChicago. 3 each Bike, Run, Swim + 2 Weights.

1 Full day of total recovery.

It works for me for now, and fits into my schedule this way pretty nicely.

4 swim / 3 bike / three run and 4 days weight training. Will drop the weight training to 2 x maintenance end of March or mid-April to go more on endurance. Bike is one long, one medium and one short. Swim is all drills. Run is Long, medium and short. Allthe endurance stuff is building base and increasing time while keeping HR down - hoping to build speed by 1st event June 6. (Pigman Sprint near CR IA.

Let's see,

Bike trainer 3x a week
Run (treadmill) 2x a week
Swim 2-3x a week (I have 3 in my schedule, but it's sooo high maintenance!)

Then on the weekends I do a long ride or a brick.
OH and I do Pilates once a week.
I know, I know, I need strength training, but I HAVEN'T GOT THE TIME! (sorry for yelling!)

After counting up my workouts I realized it looked like a lot. But I am trying to lose 100 pounds and since I just LOOOOOVE food I guess I have to work out a lot!

It's just difficult balancing what I think should be my weightloss workouts with my training workouts. Like I need to exercise for an hour a day, yet I need to go slow on the run because I want to train at my base.

So I end up running, biking and swimming 2x. Once for weightloss and one for training.

Is that crazy? When I get down to my fighting weight I plan on dropping my workouts down.

Ovetta.

Currently base training: 17 workouts per week:
6 runs - 1 long and 5 easy (Sun - Fri)
4 bikes - 1 long and 3 easy (Tue Wed Thu Sat)
4 swims - 1 long and 3 easy (Mon Tue Thu Fri)
3 lifts - all upper body on (Mon Wed Fri)

I normally work 730 to 400. I am also allowed workout time on Mon Wed Fri, so it definitely helps out.

  • ...Kids are grown up, so I have alot more time (less $ since I get to pay for college)..I also have the benefit of only having to work 40 hours a week and I get in a workout during lunch at work 3-4 times a week.

  • Total: 15 to 19 per week

all you folks with 17 plus workouts a week I need to ask....what are you running from....little voices in your head....bad relationships.....depression.....lack of social life. A perfect example is the fly boy who switched from marathoning to Ironman due to 12 major injuries in the past years. What is really going on in your head. Balance your life people your not paid pros. The sooner you do this the longer you will be able to TRI. Thats the goal isn't it? I am in it for the long run. What say you?

I don't think "flyboy" changed to IM from 'thons because of injuries as you put it. Sounds as if you're feeling a bit intimidated by what everyone else is doing, or maybe by what you're not doing? If someone is comfortable with their workout routine then it's right for them, as is whatever your routine is. Live and let live. So say I!

Tri Mom did I tell you how much I love you! As one of "those with more than 17 workouts a week," I wanted to chime in on Mr. California's comment. First of all, I want to give respect to Joshua for serving in our armed forces. Thanks Joshua. And the fact that he's moved up to IM is inspirational to me and not something to be ridiculed.I dated an ultramarathon runner for more than four years and he would always get the question from people less motivated or more intimidated by his racing and training. "Why would you run 100 miles," they'd asked incredulously and look at him like he was crazy. While all the while they'd give their blessing to any freaky moral debauchery that was going on around them but look at someone at the height of fitness as a moron. It drove me crazy. He wasn't running "FROM," anything. He was running "TOWARD," his personal greatness. The fact that he pushed his body, never over the limit mind you, made him realize just how awesome his physicial and spiritual psyche was. How do you know how far you can go if you never get past the start line.Who puts a limit on determination? No one seeking to achieve greatness I say. Just six months ago I couldn't get myself into the gym to do THREE workouts. And it was literally killing. Killing me to know that I wasn't even in the ballpark of my fitness ability let alone next to its greatness level. Killing me physically as well. The fact that I MAKE the time, commit the time and relish the time to work out is not a deficiency rather an evolution at least for me. Running from? Not hardly! Running towards greatness! You bet!Ovetta
