Subject: BIKING MESSING UP RUNNING CADENCE

I started serious biking (for me ) last week and it has raised havok with my running pace! 

I'm a fairly strong runner (3:36 mary, 1:32 half mary, 19:22 5K), but after I get off the bike I can't seem to hit the breaks on my running!!  It takes all I have NOT to be below 7:30 pace for 4 miles when I brick.

Before I started biking and bricking my general training pace was 8:30 per mile.  Now it's 8 minutes or lower.  And before anyone asks, no, I don't use a hr monitor! 

My main concern is that I don't want to mess up my conditioning or running base by running too hard...  but honestly, an 8:30 pace seems slow right now...  argh.

I found that cycling and brick workouts in particular had the nice side effect of increasing my running cadence. My mile splits improved noticably as my biking got better, also, without my heart rate climbing into the anaerobic RED zone. As long as your HR is not too high I don't see how you will 'mess up your conditioning or running base'. What's your perceived effort during these runs? If you listen to your body I think you will be ok.

People find the wierdest things to kvetch about! LOL!

I'm guessing it's a problem because it wears you out. There were some threads about a week or two ago talking about reducing or increasing one's cadence to 90 before getting off the bike because that's similar to a normal running cadence and makes for an easier transition. Perhaps you should get a cadence meter for your bike and a small metronome. Identify your usual running cadence with the metronome and try to match that cadence on your bike for the last few miles before you transition.

I am definitely more tired/ gassed now then I was before... but I am not laboring or anything...  I really should get a HR monitor.

While I understand the importance of not overtraining in the run (I'm a runner myself), I found drastic improvements in my running once I started tri training. It's possible that you are waking up some muscles in the bike that you don't necessarily use in the run. Maybe this is responsible for the higher turnover of your legs.

I would suggest checking your pulse during a normal run and during the run portion of a brick (no fancy HRM needed, just a good ol' fashioned finger and watch [and heart, I suppose]). This will clue you into if you are over training, or just improving your conditioning!
