Subject: Need some calorie counting help
I have about 25 pounds to lose and want to start counting my calories to help me achieve that goal.  I have never attempted counting calories before because it seemed overwhelming and time consuming but I've finally realized it may be the only way I'll be able to get this weight off.  I just joined The Daily Plate to get me started.  It looks pretty easy to look up calorie & nutrition info for many things but I can't figure out how to count calories for things like family recipes that I make often but don't have the nutritional info for.  Any help and advice on this subject would be greatly appreciated!

About the only way to do it is to figure out the calories for the entire dish.  If you eat 1/4 of it, then you get 1/4 of the calories for then entire dish.

BUY A SCALE.  Weight is more accurate then any other measurement (most of the time).  If you want accurate calories you need to weigh most of your foods.

You'll have to just work out what the ingredients all add up to. It's a lot of work - and be warned it may very well turn you off some long-time family favourites!

Another option is to find a personal chef who does recipe conversions ... I work with one here - she takes family recipes and tweaks them so they are healthier, withouth losing any of the taste. She provides nutritional information with each recipe.

Like the others said figure out the calories for the dish and divide by how much of it you eat. It sounds annoying, but once you've figured out the most common meals (and most of us tend to be creatures of habit when it comes to food) then it's not a big deal because you've then entered then in the system so you don't have to figure it out each time. Same goes for foods that might not be in the database but you have to enter manually. Most food diaries will let you store information.

which online food diary do you think is the easiest to use?  I signed up yesterday for dailyplate.com but haven't explored others.

Here are some that I know of...

dailyplate.com
sparkpeople.com
fitday.com
myfooddiary.com

Personally I used myfooddiary even though there is a monthly cost as I just found it the most user friendly, but they all basically work the same. I prefer Dailyplate as the free option. Now I used the food logs on my BodyBugg so I'm, not using any of the stand alone food logs.

You might just want to test run, and see which you prefer.
