Subject: my first sprint triathlon - how will transitions work?
Hi guys

My first post! I'm entering my first triathlon in a few weeks (sprint - erewash derbyshire).

It's 400m indoor swim. I'm sure I'll get something from the compeition soon but I havent got a clue about clothing and particularly the transition from an indoor swim to bike. So I'm in my swim shorts after the swim...then what?

Any ideas folks?

Many thanks - am very excited

Welcome!

It is unlikely that you will be able to change clothes.  Most people wear triathlon shorts, which are made for swimming, biking and running (so, no changing).

As for the top, lots of people will swim with a tri top on too.

Plan on wearing whatever you swim in for the duration of the events.  Around here, nudity, while appreciated, is grounds for disqualification.

So...If you haven't tried bicycling in your swim shorts and running in your swim shorts, the next day or two would be a good time to try...

hi chaps - thought I'd update as a few lessons learned.

Had a great day - finished in 1hr 28;

400M Swim – 11:30 (breastroke - personal best)

T1 – 2:30 (rubbish – couldn’t do my helmet up)

20km Bike - 42m (too much time freewheeling trying to catch my breath)

T2 – 0:52

5km Run - 30m (wish I’d worn socks)

Rode in swimming shorts. Suffered chafing from bike seat and then the run. I normally run in long lycra shorts so I wont make that mistake again.

Also, ran without socks which was ok but a bit sore by the end. Will persevere to harden feet up a bit though.

Had a nightmare in T1 with helmet clip tucked into helmet. Should have just taken it off and started again.

Overall really enjoyed it and cant wait to do another one!

Congrats Triathlete!  The one piece of Tri specific gear that I highly recommend to first-timers is Tri shorts.   One short you can do it all in: they swim well, have a little pad for biking and don't bother you running much either.
