Midlothian, Virginia
United States
Richmond Multisports
Sunny
Total Time = 2h 15m 2s
Overall Rank = 371/392
Age Group = Athena
Age Group Rank = 36/36
Pre-race routine:

breakfast -- egg & English muffin
MUST have coffee
Needed more H20/Gatorade
Event warmup:

Wait 90 minutes to hit the pool. Brought my knitting, so I went for H20 at the end of each row. Stretching -- not sure what else I can do to warm up for swim.
Swim
  • 13m 54s
  • 437 yards
  • 03m 11s / 100 yards
Comments:

Got caught behind a woman who WALKED the last few strokes of every lap, then would not pause at the wall and let other pass, so I used a lot of energy trying to pass her. *grumble*

I may be slow, but I can do freestyle & breaststroke the whole time.
What would you do differently?:

Need to bring H20 bottle if waiting on a pool swim.
Transition 1
  • 05m 46s
What would you do differently?:

Need to improve cardio fitness & cut transition time. Taking my time in T1 after the swim didn't really help much in bike prep.

Also, need to freeze water bottles night before & put on bike before leaving for swim so I don't have hot Gatorade. Yuk.
Bike
  • 1h 00m 36s
  • 12.43 miles
  • 12.31 mile/hr
Comments:

Forgot Gu. Got shoelace caught in gears around M1. (Every single rider who passed asked if I was OK. While they were pedaling uphill. Women rock!)
What would you do differently?:

Double knot shoes as long as I'm using toe clips & not bike shoes.

Put Gu in bike helmet so I don't forget it.
Transition 2
  • 05m 58s
Comments:

Rack mates didn't leave me any room for my bike. Thanks, guys. Oh well, that happens with so many 1st timers. That flustered me a bit, also since I have a hybrid & it's a bit tougher to get onto the rack.
What would you do differently?:

Need to improve cardio fitness & cut transition time. Taking my time in T2 didn't really help much in run prep -- get going sooner since I walked the 1st part anyway.
Run
  • 48m 49s
  • 3.11 miles
  • 15m 42s  min/mile
Comments:

Not much slower than the 5K I did in June. Need to be able to run entire run leg -- not bad considering I had NEVER run before this summer.

Also, I pulled back a bit since I think I got too much cold water in my tummy & didn't want to barf.
What would you do differently?:

Need to run more. Duh.

Also, keep my own bottle colder, so I don't rely so much on the water stations where the water is a bit too cold.

Need to pull hair back or something -- can't run in a hat b/c I get too hot, but I looked downright scary in the race photos. (I know, I'm shallow).
Post race
Warm down:

Mist tent -- best thing ever. Seriously hot freaking day & I was worried I wouldn't cool down quick enough.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Considering this was my first tri & most of my training time was cut due to me or the girls being sick most of the summer, not too bad.

I think I need to work on everything about the same -- I could get a few minutes faster in the swim, but it wouldn't make as much difference as say, 10 minutes cut off the bike. Or 6 min total cut from transition.

Event comments:

Race staff, volunteers, other athletes -- so supportive. I will definitely race in Richmond again (2 hours away for me, but the inlaws live here, so I have built-in child care).

I'm just bitter enough at coming in next-to-last that I think I'm going to do the Napier Realtor Sprint in October with the husband.

Course: SUPER hilly. I didn't train well enough for hills, but muscled through anyway. Also, really isolated in spots. My super-sweet husband came out to second third to give some moral support -- right when I was HATING life, and just before the short but very steep hill to turn onto Coalfield Rd. Oh, and I passed someone! (Ok, so she was 11, but I still beat her.)

Yup -- I outed myself as a couch potato, but it helped me keep from getting to anxious while I waited.  The husband came back after my swim & picked it up for me so I wouldn't forget it.  How sweet is he?

(Oh and I got a few more rows done on a baby blanket I'm working on for a friend expecting twin boys in October.  Still have another entire blanket to do!)
