So I'm at the pool and this really fit guy starts swimming at the same time I do...he was a few seconds behind me but pretty much kept pace for the first 200m then steadily dropped off, but not too bad. He would've flown past me, I think, if he could keep his legs from sinking. He drops out at 500m and I have the pool to myself for another 1000m, didn't think any more of it. Was a beautiful swimming day, warm air, cool pool, absolutely perfect and I think something FINALLY clicked with my swimming a couple days ago that let me drop from 2:20 to 2:11 / 100 yds. So I'm stoked. Not going fast, but definitely showing improvement.

I get out of the pool and Fit Guy comes over from watching his kids play in the other pool, to complement my stroke, my speed and just in general the swim. Wow. That has NEVER happened to me. I did tell him I'm not really all that fast or that good, but I've been at it for awhile. Turns out he and his buddy want to do a sprint tri, and he started asking me all kinds of questions. It was so cool. Naturally, I encouraged him to come here and check out the training plans.

Just had to share, because that kind of thing never happens to me. I hardly look the part, and I was in my tri top that really highlights all the extra weight I'm carrying around...of course, normal people don't swim in tri tops so that's probably what tipped him off.

Thats why swimming is all about Technique Technique Technique! Strength matters not.... (kinda sounded like yoda there). You could be the most muscular/fit person, but if you have never done Freestyle correctly you are jsut wasting energy..

Congrats!

I'm no expert, but sometimes it seems that a little extra body fat just helps with buoyancy in the pool. Some of the low body fat types just seem to sink like a rock, and I'm always amazed when I watch a kids-of-steel race and see how fast some of the kids who look like they still have their "baby fat" are.

My swimming coach's husband is a bit on the "big-boned" side. I don't think he could walk 5 miles much less run...despite this, I have yet to beat him in any distance longer than 50 meters. Moral of this story, don't judge a book by its cover. He just glides across the top of the water with effortless technique, while I flounder like a tiny mackerel. Lesson learned-technique is half the battle.

Excellent! This happens all of the time, by the way. There is absolutely no replacement for good technique, no matter the level of fitness. Also, a few extra pounds of body fat add quite a bit of bouyancy. Fit guy probably has very lean legs, and they drop like anchors. (take it from one who resembles that). This seems to happen much more in the pool than on the bike or on foot, so even though you may beat fit guy out of the water, there's this saying "nobody wins a triathlon in the swim, but they do lose them there".

Congrats to both you and to fit guy who had the self-esteem to encourage you and ask you for pointers.

I do know, of course, that his muscle gives him some leg-sinking issues because he's not worked with a swimming coach to overcome that, whereas I couldn't sink unless somebody tied an anchor to my feet so have a natural advantage. And yeah, super kudos to him for wanting to learn rather than having an ego problem. I can learn a lot from that attitude.

It was just so cool to get a pat on the back from a stranger. Just another reason I keep to my policy of saying "Good Job" to anybody I think is doing a good job...it really means a lot to me, and I hope it means something to others...or at least, that they don't get unhappy and deck me (because that would cut into training!)

There are no 'fit' guys in my Master's swim group.  But there are a bunch of amazing swimmers - more like swim gods to someone like me who struggles so much, but "looks" much more fit than any of them.  So now, it looks like you are a swim goddess!  Kudos to you...that's very awesome.

Way to go, madeye!

Last week I invited my rail thin friend and her family to swim with my family at the Y.  (This is the same friend who, combined with her husband, doesn't weigh what I did 17 months ago).  I was telling her that I had recently worked up to  a 2800 yard swim and a 13 mile run.  Her comment was something like, "wow, you're probable in better shape than I am."  Well, DUH!  I've been busting my humb this last year logging mile after mile in 3 disciplines.  I might still have lots of flubber covering my fit self, but I've never been in better shape.

Am I the only one who see's the humor in this title?  I must be wired differently...

ETA- Nope.  Just showed the title to a few of my co-workers and they started cracking up.  Whew, I thought it was just me.
