Hello everyone. I am attempting my first tri this summer at a very informal sprint tri at the beach in nj on 7/31. I am very nervous. I was hoping to try a more formal one later in the summer. However, I have just signed up for the Great North Run half marathon which is 9/18. Is there time between the two for another race in August, or will I burn myself out. The GNR will be a challenge for me distance-wise so I don't want to push too hard and injure myself. What is considered to be a good amount of time between races?

Depends very much on your personal level of fitness, your ability to recover, and your goals for the race. There are folks here that do sprints on seven days rests. There are others here who do one sprint a year. I've done a century a week after a marathon and thought that was a big deal, others do a marathon and a century+ the same day, after a 2.4-mile swim ( I think that's called an IronMaster, or something like that ).

I think the main question is how quickly you can recover. The short answer is that; yes there's plenty of time between now and the middle of September to run a couple of tri's while training for a 1/2 marathon. A sprint tri will probably be easier on your body than the 1/2 marathon will, as the swim and bike don't pound your body like a long run does.
