Age Group Rank = 0/
Pre-race routine:

After waking up, I had a Powerbar and two Endurolytes with water.
Event warmup:

Just jumped in the water for a few minutes and swam to the first buoy and back.
Swim
  • 1h 36m 57s
  • 3800 meters
  • 02m 33s / 100 meters
Comments:

There was only 30 of us! The whole idea behind the first few years of this event is to get the experience to make it international since there are no other full Iron-distance races in the Caribbean. We had about 300 people working on the race. Awesome!

I started off way to the side and had to swim back in towards the group at around the first buoy. I couldn't believe "the day" had finally arrived.

I think I was a bit too excited in the first lap, so I made a conscious effort to slow down. I kept repeating to myself "here and now" just to avoid getting carried away with all the stuff going on in my mind.

On the way out to the second and final lap, I swallowed lots of water...and then some more before the turnaround point. So I slowed down a bit and vomited...I have loads of memories from my scuba diving days, so I was pretty calm in the water, regrouped and kept swimming significantly slower.
What would you do differently?:

I would pace myself a little better and concentrate on not swallowing so much water! Anyways, I have to be happy of all the progress since August 04 when I began learning to swim properly.
Transition 1
  • 06m 31s
Comments:

Had an OK transition...chatted with a couple of other slow swimmers, put on jersey, bodyglide, helmet and shoes...little did I know I had incurred in two errors I would pay for dearly later in the day...
What would you do differently?:

I figured I could swim, bike and run in my Orca shorts...Was I ever wrong! Also, I had a plan for fueling and drinking at T1 which was not followed because of the vomiting incident during the swim.

Bike
  • 00m
  • 180 kms
  • 0.00 km/hr
Comments:

I'm glad I had pre-rode the course since I knew that the wind would go from friend to foe at the 90k mark. Unfortunately, because of the swim-vomit incident, I didn't drink or eat until about an hour into the ride. At the 90k aid station, I had some Powerade, a couple of Powergels and went off...knowing that the hilly section was about to begin.

I took it really easy at the hills and got through that part faster than I thought (at least it seemed that way).

At approximately 5 hrs. into the ride, everything got a little weird. The bottom of my left foot started to ache so much that I couldn't stand on the pedals at all, so I had to practically stop pedaling to stretch out a bit.

Also, I began to realize why I should have worn bike shorts instead of the same shorts all race...major chafing down there! Not good.

Then the real trouble began. My legs started cramping; I cramped in places which I didn't know could actually cramp!!
What would you do differently?:

I wasn't prepared with a "B" plan in case I vomited in the swim. So I ended up eating and drinking when my stomach settled, but it was way too late.
Transition 2
  • 09m 9s
Comments:

Right after passing the dismount line, I started walking really funny because of the cramps (little did I know I would still be walking that way a couple of days after the race!). At the tent, an assistant asked what I wanted, and I jokingly said "a massage". Well, much to my surprise, in about a minute the same guy walked in with two PT's...I felt like Aladdin! These two big, intimidating ladies threw me on the ground, pulled and stretched me and beat up on my legs for quite a while!

Magic...no more cramps for the rest of the day.
Run
  • 5h 54m
  • 42 kms
  • 08m 26s  min/km
Comments:

After leaving T2, I knew I was going to run well into the night. I decided to "run" the whole thing (except for aid stations) even though there were people walking the whole course whom I would find at the same spots in every lap...their walk was about as fast as my run!!!

By then, it was really dark; I was the last one out there. Then the highlight of my race came when my girlfriend came in to run the last 12k with me...We joked, laughed and got serious, laughed again...and FINALLY...got to the finish line.
What would you do differently?:

A month ago I decided to forget about time goals and stuff like that. I had not reached my "peak" fitness; work and life got in the way of optimal training the last two months...I decided my goal was "Just Finish", which I did...so I guess I would do nothing different at all!
Post race
Event comments:

The picture at the bottom is Maydelene at the beginning of the run. This may sound cliché, but I couldn't have done it without her. The picture sums everything up; it speaks to me and tells me a million magnificent things.

Oh Felix,
CONGRATULATIONS you IRONMAN! Thanks so much for sharing the journey on BT. I have been inspired by you and your effort It means a lot to me to be able to experience this in spirit with you. Thanks. I am amazed at your fantastic swim and also that you managed to FINISH this and become an Ironman - just an amazing accomplishment. Your RR was great too - I know there are others in training for IM who will take a lot away from reading it - especially in regards to fuel etc - You just made my day - well done again.
PS - I love the photo - sometimes it is so true - a picture says a thousand words
Awesome stuff. M

Well, I've said it already, but well done mate.  That was a fatastic effort, especially considering the day didn't go exactly to plan by the sounds of it.

It is has been so good to share your journey with you and watch you become the Ironman that was ALWAYS inside of you...thankyou.

You are an Ironman!
Congrats. I have said it before and I'm sure you know it too. It doesn't matter how long it takes you as long as you finish, you are still an Ironman. Welcome to the club!

Hard to put into words what an accomplishment this really is.  Truly an amazing race.  Very cool how you asked for that massage and BAM...there you go!  Nice recovery from sickness on the swim.  Happy to see NO FLATS!!!  Very cool Felix.  Fantastic finish to an incredible journey.  Way to go.

Hi - I was reading your race report today at work and I got a good laugh from the massage story.

Congratulations for showing up and moving through the difficult moments.

What an amazing, amazing accomplishment! Thanks for the inspiration.

ps... the pain in your foot, did you ever figure out what caused that? I had a problem with that in the ride in portion of the 1/2 that I just did. I had never experienced this before...

Thanks everyone. I'm glad to have shared this journey with you. Damn it, if I can do this, any of you can! Seriously.

I've posted some pictures of the race and embarrassing shots of the post-IM BBQ at my house a week later.
