Got a great deal on a full carbon frame for a tri bike build (some no-name monocoque construction). Will be used only for sprint tri (i.e. 15mi race max). Here's the problem: rider weight is 230lbs. Am I doomed to a guaranteed frame failure? I don't want to hit a bump and have the thing split in half. I already understand that most aero wheels fail at that weight but what about frame?

The frame should be fine as long as its properly built.
I'd be more concerned about wheels  - if you are 230lbs and powerful enough to move the bike quite fast, you had better look at something with 32 or 36 spokes made of 14/15 gage spoke.

I am about 20 lbs lighter than you and I would not touch carbon and esp. aluminum.   I think that you are not guaranteed frame failure, but there will be an increased probability for frame failure.  Plus, it is more than failure.  Because of the lack of elasticity in carbon, the heavier the load, the worse the ride.  Nothing to lose about giving it a shot, but be careful, esp. around potholes and crappy pavement.
