Subject: Bicycle Shorts

I'm looking for a good, durable pair of bike shorts... for rides longer than 50 miles. I have a couple of pairs that I thought would be good for this purpose, but I'm finding they don't have padding in the correct places... I need padding more toward the front and less toward the butt.

Any suggestions??? Going to relegate my old shorts to spinning duty.

I've tried:

  • Nike cycling shorts (not only deficient padding, but thin in the butt area, so my butt crack was evident for all to see!)
  • Terry women's shorts (T1 model, I believe...padding was all toward the butt area, none where I want it)

Any other suggestions??? Pearl Izumi seems to be popular.. anyone know anything about these? I don't mind spending $$ if I can ensure the comfort of my nether region.

THANX!

I have 2 pair of Reeboks with the gel padding; protects the Fiorucci area pretty good. My other pair are Pearls and the chamois is fine but I don't wear them for long rides.

Where did you get the Reeboks? I've got one pair of those, but they're pretty worn out... I recall liking them when they were new...(I believe they were purchased around 1999)  I haven't seen them anywhere lately, though... ??????

Ditto here with the Performance cheepies, but they don't have a lot of padding. I also like the voler shorts at www.velowear.com , especially their bibs.

The Pearl Izumi shorts may be what you're looking for, seems like their padding had variable thickness, more where you might need it most, especially if you look at the chick-specific shorts. Find a local store that has them and give them a look/see.

I wouldn't recommend the gel padding someone mentioned above, especially on 50+-milers.

Better lycra and more (and better designed) panels make a better short. Either real or fake Chamois are going to be designed essentially the same. Protect the butt. Good Izumis shorts can cost $200. That's nuts. My favs (as a guy) have always been 8 panel Cannondale. for cheapies, 6 panel Trek. I doubt that your going to find a short designed specifically to pad your pubic symphysis.

That's just not true. Look at the PI shorts ( http://www.pearlizumi.com/technology.php?mode=displayall&cat_id=6 ) and see how the chamois is designed, then tell me it's designed the same way as, say, the Performance Century shorts, which is just a plain flat padding.

You can get "Good Izumis shorts" in the $50 range.(http://www.performancebike.com/shop/profile.cfm?SKU=19881&subcategory_ID=1120 ).

My problem is they don't last any longer than the perfromance shorts that I can get on sale for ~$20, and my butt is tough enough that the cheepies work just fine.

In my opinion--and I know opinions are like the area the chamois covers -- the Pearl Izumi shorts are the best. I've ridden many different brands (used to get em' free at the bike shop where I worked) and by far the PIs are the most comfortable. I like the fact they don't need a big, bulky pad to get such comfort.

Of course, as others have mentioned, they'll run ya' a few bucks.

I've got a pricy pair of Pearl Izumis that I always reach for first. I think it's the "attack" model. But nothing worked to relieve my problem (let's just say I found cycling to be a tad more stimulating than I expected) until I got a different seat. I got one with a cutout down the middle and it made all the difference. Now I lean forward on the seat with my weight born by my "sit bones" and all is good.

Also look to see if you've got the seat angled right. You really ought to need the padding just on your rear, where they put it.

I said they CAN cost $200. the basic shape of the Chamois, ie that modified figure 8 pattern, is essentially the same in all shorts. That's why I don't think her problem can be fixed with shorts. BTW, wear a REAL cyclists pair of shorts vs. cheapies and you'll instantly notice a difference. My favourite all-time were a pair of 8-panel tights made by Cannondale. Incredible material. Survived wipe-outs, repelled water. lasted yrs of MTB mud, grease, etc. Awesome product. Their shorts were nearly as good.

My favorite shorts are the Performance Century Liqui-cell.  They have chamois and some kind of liqui-gel padding in them.  They are good to their name; I have done a century in them with hardly any ill effects.  Be warned, though: there's is a "familiarization" period in terms of "feel."  Gel rides just a bit different than straight chamois.  But, once one becomes acclimated, it's a nice ride.

Also, they are on sale right now AND if you use the coupon code listed in THIS THREAD  you can get a few pair for next to nothing!

I'm going to try angling my seat a bit too... I wonder if it's not up too high in the front (although it appears to be level) and that might be what's causing my "issue". Will let you all know (in case you're interested) how the new seat position and shorts work out... I wound up getting the PI's at the LBS... They have the 3D chamois, and it comes up considerably further in the front. (Sorta like a giant DIAPER) but hey, whatever works. For what it's worth, they only (only?) cost $79.99. Material is nice, and they seem to be sturdy. I'll know more after this weekend's bicycle excursion. Thanks, guys... Happy Memorial Day!!! Whizzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz
