I read that there are two types of triathletes; those who say they want to do ironman and those that do, but don't say it.
or something like that...

I see it on the horizon for me, maybe after I grad school, but I really need to feel like physically capable.
I think I'll need to train to train!

I am wondering how and when you felt ready for the distance?
Tell me about it!

For me personally, I just went for it in my 2nd year of racing.  I figured there was no time like the present and signed up for Louisville, trained for 6 months and had a blast.  This may not be for everyone, but worked for me.  I loved the journey and see myself doing more in the future.

similar to this ^^^

I knew I wanted to do one, it was my second year of racing and my base was pretty decent (decent enough, I should say).  I checked my schedule and compared that to several IM plans and realized I had the time, ability and desire to take the plan on.  So I signed up and jumped in with both feet.

for me IM has never been an allure or like THE challeneg I need to go after to feel challenged, motivated, happy etc. To me trainng and pushing my body to attempt going as fast I can is what drives me. When I began tri-ing I always though that I would focus on that 1st and eventually I would do an IM *IF* and *when* I felt like it. It took me 6 years to decide and finally I'll do my 1st next year. I feel I am at a point in which I can shoot to train to race an IM as opposed to complete it, that is a new motovation for me to go after.

I did my first triathlon way back in 1986 or 87.  I did my first iron race last month.  I never had any desire to do an IM event until a couple years ago.  For me I think when I was younger everything I did I was shooting to go faster and get a PR.  I haven't PR'd  for at least 10-years...not even close! That is until this year when I did an IM...I PR'd there!  Anyway, I wasn't affraid of the distance...I figured I could do it but I really enjoyed the burn more than the LSD type training.  But seems that's all I my body wants to do anymore is long-steady efforts and figured it was time.  And I enjoyed the experience...all of it!

I was a marathon runner for 4 years, and got into tris last season (so my IM will be at the end of my second tri season).

I love going long -- the physcial and mental challange of endurance events.

I also wanted to do an IM before we had our first baby..

and really, there is no time like the present. Right now I am healthy and have the time and (most of the ) money to do an IM... who knows what tomorrow will bring?

Once I did my first sprint, there was no doubt in my mind that i would be doing an Ironman. I am doing my second in 3 weeks!

In 2007 a friend of mine was training for an ironman.  We were talking, and I remember saying, "Oh, I could never do that!" and then I remember thinking, "How do you know you couldn't do that?"  That comment stuck with me and eventually I decided that I would at least need to try.  I was a runner but had never done a triathlon...I couldn't even swim!  So I took lessons and learned to swim - albeit very slowly , did my first tri in June 2008, did a several other races and then completed my first IM last month (yay!).  I was destined from the beginning...

Similar to what Jorge said, I had no particular draw to the iron distance.  (Actually, I never had a draw to triathlon at all...I was a runner and former swimmer who got talked into signing up for a sprint by his wife and realized it was something I'd probably be okay at.)  In my case, I'd done an HIM and it went well and the opportunity to do an independent IM for very little money came up on my radar.  Hard to say "no" to $220 registration and $0 lodging for race within driving distance...hardest part was committing to the training.

(Which, IMO, should be true for most people...the race is always going to be no more than 17 hours out of one day of your life--training is a different matter.)

I signed up for IMMoo never having done a tri before.  I had done numerous marathons and lots and lots of long riding but never a tri.  I LOVE setting a goal that takes lots of time, determination, focus and heart to complete.  And after this past season doing an oly, 1/2 and full IM, I found out that I like longer distances a LOT and am hooked...  I'm currently researching training plans for my next IM.

As for "will I be physically ready?"  If you follow a plan (and don't cheat it), you will be ready.  If you've watched an IM (or marathons or century rides for that matter) you'll know that no matter what your physical fitness is...if you train, you can do it. (Might not be the fastest, but you'll get it done.)  People say "I could never do that" and I always say "if you train, yes you can!"  (Moral of the story: it's not the race that's hard...I mean it is, but not compared to the months of training!  But that's part of the IM journey!)

For me it was a promise I made to myself years ago that I would do one before the end of my 40th year - and guess what that;s next year. Doesnt matter to me that I took the last 5 years off of multisport events altogether - just suckin it up and gonna win IMLP, or at least just not die.

Race day is kind of a deadline

How did I know I was ready to sign up?  We'd discussed it as a family and agreed that I could spend a year training for an IM.  It's pretty scary when you finally click *submit* but then train, train, train to make it the best day possible.

Watch this video, you may have to copy and paste into your browser. I decided to do one after I did my first HIM. I knew I wanted to keep pushing the distance. I can truly say that for me IM is my favorite distance. It is by far the most challenging and most fun to train for. So many variables go into an Ironman race that are not present at shorter races.

I just wrapped my first season of tri, last year (2008) was my first year "full time" running. Ever since my first marathon I've been wondering "what's next." Love tri, and like the others here there's no time like the present. It's definitely on my bucket list -- and as I learned from my father dying way too young (more about that at runningformyfather.com) there's no time like the present.Probably a little early for me too - but why the hell not?! Just go ahead and register!

I had done a few triathlons around 1989-90.  Back then, I always wondered if I could do an IM.  But, for a bunch of reasons, I quit sport before finding out.

Then, in August 2008 I had a chance to see people doing IMKY and realized it was still something I wanted to try (think bucket list), so in September 2008 I signed up for IMKY 2009.  At the time, I had no idea if I'd be able to get ready in time.  But I did know that I was fully committed to being as ready as I could be.

I knew that I wanted to do an IM when I started off the couch 2 ish years ago.  I figured I was ready to start training for it after I had finished my first HIM.  I then trained 10 months for it and had a blast.  (2 very long training years).  It is a leap of faith with enough time to commit to the training and allowing enough time to get enough base to start the build.

So if you can swim 1 to 1.5 miles continuously, run 13 to 15 miles continuously and bike 50 to 60 miles on separate days at a sensible pace and have had that base for several months, then you have the base to start the build.  My numbers not any scientific thing, just when I knew I could take it to the next level.

Signing up for your fist IM is kinda like buying your first house or having your first child - you will never find the perfect time....eventually you just have to jump in.  It was not until I did couple of marathon that I could even get my head around an IM.

I decided to try it sometime after my first HIM (and at end of my second full tri season).  Have done a couple of marathons, so know this will be a long, slow, rollercoaster of a day.  Also, saw lots of tri friends (many of whom are bigger, slower than me) train and successfully (and happily!) complete various IM events.

My first is IM Florida in 3 weeks.  In their book, Going Long, Friel and Bryn say you are never truly 'ready' for an Ironman - 'you commit, train and pray.'  My wife and I did the cost/benefit of doing this year vs. 2010 or 2011, and we both decided this was the best year vis-a-vis work, family, travel, etc.  So, here I am...hopefully just about ready to take the plunge!

Cheers,

Mark
