I have never run a marathon before an just noticed in my results there are two different times.

Which time do you record for your own records? It is nice to know that my time was actually almost 2.5 minutes faster than the official time. What do you do?

Chip time for sure. You're 'official' result may be the gun time but I figure I was on the course for the chip time. In chip races with crowded starts I don't even start running until I cross the mat.

I say chip time.  Not fair to have to count the time getting to the starting line...

The chip time is from when you cross the official start to finish.  I've been in big races where the back of the pack doesn't even get to the start line for 3-5 minutes after the gun has gone off and the front runners are almost a mile gone.  Something like Boston or New York Marathon could take 20+minutes for everyone to get past the official start line.

Chip time!
