Subject: goal times for first tri?
Okay--second question: now that I know I have enough time to train to finish my first triathlon (thanks for your feedback!) what kind of goal times should I shoot for? What's respectable? I run a 10 to 11 minute mile, am 28 years old and just completed a 10K--what is a time goal I can work towards on my swim and bike for a sprint-distance tri?

Thanks again!

Times will vary.  I would suggest you go out to the race sites (trifind, etc.) and look at the races you are wanting to participate in.  They usually post the results for the last couple of years.  You can look at that to see what times seem reasonable to you (are you competitive for your age group, just looking for 'respectability', trying to be an overall winner - that will be most important in setting a goal time).

Me personally, my swimming is not very good, so I need to set a goal that is right for me.  My bicycle is a little better, so maybe my goals are a little different there.  You may make more progress in one event than another - therefore, you may want to set a more aggressive bike goal than a swimming goal.

All of that said, the best idea, I think is to check past results and go from there.

Train hard, rest harder.

As far as "respectable", you can only compare yourself with yourself.  Unless you were highly competitive in one or more of the individual disciplines, don't worry about time, and pressure yourself about being "fast enough".  Run your own race and best of luck to you.

What is Respectable?  Anybody that started the race and finished is Respectable!  Have fun and you will remember that day for a long time.

I don't have goal times yet. My only goal is to finish and to be driven home in something other than an ambulance. Anything else is gravy

I recently asked a similar question, and someone mentioned to look at last years times in the tri I'm going to do. I found that the slowest person was just over 2 hours (sprint tri), the fastest was just over 1 hour (!!), but the MEAN time was 1:47:12. Considering my age and (lack of) ability, I'm shooting for the 1:30-1:45 range.

I've learned that it will depend on numerous things. Is it a pool swim, or lake swim? How much wind? Hilly or flat bike/run? I know I tend to run my fastest in moderate temps; 60-75 degrees.

Check last year's results; they are probably posted on the web somewhere for you to look at. If you want to compete to finish, like I'm doing, then being faster than the slowest person will be a 'win'. If you want to be really competitive, you'll see what the top times are, and can plan and train accordingly.

I'm doing a sprint in May; the overall winner came in with a time of 58:31, the first in my age group (50-54) came in with a time of 1:15:36. So, I am shooting for a time of just under 1:15:00. I have done the 500 meter swim in 10:30, a 22.2 Km bike in 23:00 and a 5Km run in 33:00. This would give me an overall time of 1:06 but as I will be doing all three together and have to waste about 5 minutes in two transition areas, I think that 1:14:59 might be something for me to shoot for. For you, it would have to be based on your current times.

Hi Tex - First goal: Finish - Second Goal: be in the middle of the pack - Long term Goal: here's where you look within and decide what it is you want out of this. If you are a competitive type you will want to move up the laddeer - but key issue is to be patient with yourself and know that there are lots of races and lots of seasons ahead. For my first sprint I'm with the going home in something other than an ambulance too. Would I like to move ahead - yes - but I am really talking with me about being "reasonable" - I can be had. (I burned a lot of gas way back when folks would pull up to me at red lights and rev their engines as I sat in my super MGB.)

MGB – lol

I used to have one of them 1977 Jubilee edition. They only ever made 750 of them. I just afford the car but not the maintenance or rebuilding. Ended up costing me a fortune. Still have fond memories of that car though especially flicking on the overdrive and cruising past someone!

Now I have a Volvo – still got a sedan with sports mode on it though!
