What is the differnce between an Ultra distance triathlon and an Ironman triathlon if the distances are the same? Is it a sanction thing or something else along those lines? I am new to the sport and curious. I apologize if this a dumb question!

"Ironman" is a brand.  Races that use the same distances, but are not part of the brand (or have not licensed its use), will call themselevs "'iron-distance" or "ultra" or something simlar.

Thanks for the response! I figured it is was a money or licensing thing. I guess in the end it really doesn't matter much but I was curious.

When I hear Ultra Triathlon I do not think "iron-distance".  Ultra to me means more than 140.6, I'm thinking more like Double Iron Distance or more.

Maybe to you, but it's what some 140.6 races use to desribe themselevs, e.g.:

The Chesapeakeman in Cambridge, Md calls the 140.6 an ultra distance triathalon (full ironman distance) and calls the 70.3 a 1/2 Ironaman. I think it is just branding. I guess it is was it is regardless what you call it.

Yep, there are alot of iron distance races that use the word ultra.  I was thinkng more along the lines of the IUTA http://iutasport.com/ .  We might just be debating the differance between crazy and insane.

Back in the day the ITU and TriFed (now USA Tri) tried to standardize the terminology for the various distances.  Ultra was defined so it would be 'inclusive' of  Ironman distance and the Nice Tri distance, which were the premier races at the time.  'Olympic' was dropped in favor of 'International', BTW.
