Ok, let's be honest, during the 8-17 hrs for the IM, you are going to have to go for a bio-break. So what is your habit or strategy?

On the bike I stopped and peed in the bushes and on the run I used the porta potties. I had a friend who is 70 something and she said that if she had stop to pee, she wouldn't have finished. Which is probably true since she came in 16:50 something

Because of my "incident" (vomiting) during the swim leg of my race and its effects on my hydration/nutrition strategy on the bike, I didn't pee at all during the bike leg. I peed plenty during the run, opted for bushes. In the last lap, it was so dark and I was the only one out there that I  simply walked through the pee procedure but didn't do it on myself.

If I was on the bike....I probably would just go while biking....on the run however, I would look for porta-potties or some bushes.

Do a head check on the bike, if clear let it fly.  On the run I'd use the bushes if that seemed to be the norm or try and wait for a porta-potty if others weren't using the bushes.

I wouldn't go out and practice peeing on the bike but I will say it isn't natural.  There is a technique - you really have to work at getting the pump primed.

I have bathroom issues and spent good money for my bike, so my vote is definitely stop and pee. I know I can wash the bike later, but out of respect for a great piece of machinery, I will not pee on it.

I'll stop at bike special needs and just pee....even if I didnt feel like it.

I'll try to hit the loo at T2 as well.  Feels better to run with a lighter load

Your bodily functions might not know or care what your mind is planning.  You have to be flexible.

Stop and pee. what can I say, I'm such a girl! (o:

Actually, it's true though, sometimes your mind and body don't agree on that plan, though!

Go on the bike if i can. The thought is true, sometimes your body won't go even if you want to. Weird

Being in the military, I have peed in some WEIRD places.  But nothing (and I mean NOTHING) can ever convince me that anywhere but at LEAST a porta-potty is a good place to pee.  I am an avid fan of getting OFF the bike...Now, you fellas are lucky in that bushes are a suitable alternative.  But that just does not work as well for us gals....

My strategy?  If I'm doing THAT long a race, I can surely afford 30 seconds to duck into a porta-potty to pee

I tried and tried and tried and tried and tried to go on the bike, but just couldn't!

That is a skill that I desperately want to learn.

YES, that's my thing with going on the bike. I was able to do it pretty well up to a month ago. But the past several weeks on my long ride, I haven't been able to let it go. Any tips/suggestions on how to easily go on the bike?

I found that while I am sitting in the seat I need to work to basically "fill the hose."  When i think step 1 is done I stand for a few seconds until it starts flowing, then I can sit down and enjoy myself

It just kind of seeps out and runs down the bottom of your shorts where it then blows behind you.  Hopefully you did check to make sure the coast was clear before you started!

Strange how excited I was when I discovered I had this ability.  At the Disney Half I did not see one person stopping at the side of the road.  Disney made it very clear it would be a DQ if you were seen relieving yourself on the course.

I can't pee on the bike, just can't do it. I've tried, but only in races where the podium was a potential reality, and that isn't one for me at Ironman. I find a spot. I recall once at Lake Placid after a long climb, coasting downhill into a beautiful valley I got the urge. I just got off of the bike on the side and peed in the open. MUST have been a really good idea, because when I had finished, I turned around to look for traffic and a whole line of folks had stopped behind me to do the same thing.

Sometimes they get really picky about where you pee in public at Ironman. If in a residential area - be cool, don't go on some guy's front lawn or in his bushes. Wait for a location that won't give people - homeowners and spectators - bad memories and feelings about Ironman.

I guess it's split down the middle for pee on the bike or not during IMs. Hey, if a podium is at stake, then going on the bike might be the best choice.

Well in my last race I couldn't make myself go on the bike so I got off and as I was drinking some water at the aid station my bladder let go all on it's own! How do you get pee out of your bike shoes? I just rinsed off and got back on the bike. Felt much better! Seemed to be a natural bug repellant as well!

Think of stopping to pee as a mini-break or stretch, then it's ok, like walking through a aid station on the run )

Well, for what its worth, one of my friends (she recently was first female overall at an Ironman) buys a new pair of cycling shoes after every Ironman. You figure it out.
