Subject: Broken trainer - can it be fixed?

I can no longer loosen the flywheel on my Cycleops Fluid trainer enough to allow me to put my bike on..  It loosens, up to a point, then the flywheel completely detaches.  I believe that the coupling nut (at least I think that's what the piece is called.  It looks like the picture, but it's round) is stripped.

I can tighten by inserting the screw further into the nut, but there's no way I can get my bike on the trainer with the wheel that tight.  I even tried taking all of the air out of my wheel and no luck.

Did a search to see if I could order replacement parts and couldn't find anything.  Has anyone else had this happen to them?  Can I just buy a replacement nut from the hardware store?  Any other ideas on how I can fix it?  I bought the trainer off of craigslist at the end of 2007.  Of course, I'd rather not buy another one if I can just replace one piece!

I would try a hardware store like Lowes or Home Depot. They have a large hardware selection and you should be able to find something to fix it.

I've fixed a lot more esoteric than that with stuff from Lowe's. They're generally standard threading, just be patient and make sure you have the right thread count.

A 10X24 will screw onto a 10X32 but only for one or one and a half revolutions. Make sure it will continue to tighten before you know you have the right size.

Thanks!! I do plan on going on a hardware store nut hunt and just wanted to make sure it's as simple of a fix as I think it is.

CycleOps trainers have a lifetime warranty, so you may want to call them.

Bummer.  Warranty says you have to be the original owner, with a sales receipt.  I'll try calling them anyway.  Maybe they'll send me a nut.  Thanks for the link!
