Subject: QUICK QUICK advice question
Hey triathletes:

I need a heart rate monitor.  I got a good deal of Christmas money.  Some I want to purchase a savings CD with.  But some I want to buy tri goodies.  I can afford the 310 xt.  I have wanted the 310xt.  Tri store says 405 is good enough..maybe 405cs - although I don't like it really.

Coach says to save money and just get the 305.  IF you had the money, would you blow it on the 310xt with HRM (cheapest price is 350 right now) or just get the 305?  This is an unusual question for me because usually I DO NOT have the money to even think about it. :-)

Happy New Year.  Don't kill me for HRM question.  I know some of you have used all of them - I want a watch that tracks my heart rate while swimming...but I can probably get a polar to do that.

I have the 305, and added the cadence sensor for the bike.  I like mine.  I would probably save the cash and get the 305.

Unless you want/need to swim in it, get the 305.

Here are my thoughts:

I hated the bezel on the 405 so can't recommend that one.

The 310 vs. 305 debate is mostly about price (the 305 is much much cheaper than the 310), water-resistance (310 is WR to 50 meters and the 305 isn't) and battery length (the 305 doesn't last for most racers for an IM-distance race, but 10 hours time is plenty for training with the watch).

As for Hr while swimming - why?  If its a requirement, none of these watches will measure HR in the water.  However, Suunto makes a belt that will allow you to collect the data for analysis later.

I just got the FR60 bundled with a foot pod from road runner sports.com I LOVE IT.  Its not an enormous box on my wrist, gives me HR, speed, cadence distance etc.  If you want GPS its not for you but personally so many people are always complaining about lost satellite signals blah blah blah I don't want to deal with it.  I like simple.

If this is a Christmas present to yourself, go for that 310XT. You want it, it's "gift money", and it's better than the 305. Not a lot better, probably not better enough to justify the cost difference, but undeniably better. Plus, I bet the person who gave you that money wants you to do something fun and enjoyable with it. Wouldn't you be happier showing him/her your new 310XT?

The 405 is widely considered to have a lot of issues. Not nearly as successful as the 305, not nearly so well liked by owners.

None of these work in the water because the watch can't receive the wireless signals from the chest strap. I've heard people try all sorts of things to sort of make it work, but practically speaking you can't monitor HR in the water yet.

Get the 305 and a nice aero helmet. Unless you're doing IM distances or training with a power meter 310xt you won't even miss the added funtionality of the 310xt. Sure you can swim with it as well, but why? It won't give you HR, distance or speed while you swim.

Even if you don't need/want an aero helmet, I'm sure there is something else you can do with the >$150 you'll save with the 305.

305 and an aero helmet is a great idea.

I'd go with the 305 and then you have some other fun tri-toy money to kick around. The added benefits of the 310 aren't really worth the cost difference HR is easy to get while swimming if you just stop and do a 6 second count. GPS doesn't work in water.

How about a 305 and a swimp3?

Get the 305. It's a little bulky, but you get used to it really quick.

I had the same debate several months ago and went with the 310.  I wanted it to be waterproof as I am out in the rain a lot and can swim with it (yes while swimming it doesn't monitor anything but time, but that is all I need it to do without having to change watches).  I have had no problems with it and wife uses it a lot too and she has really small wrists (305 was too big for her).

I am on both sides of this (save money vs. wanting  the cool toy).  The thing abouth the 310xt is that it is handy for races (correct me if I am wrong but) push button at the start of swim, push again and T1, push again, biking, push again (well you get the picture).  Something you can put on at the start of the race and your set.  Good luck, "Money to burn" is a terrible problem to have!

Thanks you guys.  I really really appreciate your advice.  I DO actually need a new helmet (and new shoes - sigh - forgot about that).  I do not even think I am fast enough to warrant an aero helmet.  :-)  However, you are right. I can look at other tri goodies (yes money to burn on gifts for me is yes a 'bizarre' problem to have - as I was told "get yourself something nice."  I can really buy "something nice.")

More savings for me.  Coach is selling his Kurt Kinetic Road Machine for 125.00.  Yay me.  That's one more thing off my list.
