Hello

Anyone else signed up for this event?

I am still rehabbing my right knee from surgery so I figured this would be a good way to start the season.  Plus the KOA camp ground is about 5 miles from my house.

I am currently signed up for the full 1/2 iron distance but didn't realize there is an aquabike option!  I was just diagnosed with a tibial stress fracture so if my running is not where it needs to be by then, I will be in for the aquabike.  My parents live in Rivertowne so they are super close, too.  Looking forward to it!

I put it in my race log, actually its the only thing in my race log, never did a tri before. I was glad to find an aquabike option this should be fun.  I kind of wish there was a slightly shorter race for a first attempt, but I think by then I could be ready to give it a shot.  I think the aquabike will be my only option because of foot problems- some stress fractures that finally healed up, plantar f.  both feet for 9 months now, and recently mortons neuromas both feet.  Wondering what to expect for water temperature as I have raynauds disease also and my fingers cant take extended cold..

I am debating the 1/2 distance race. Can you tell me about the area and the course. What would be a good hotel to stay at? Thanks

Hello

Plenty of good hotels right in Mt P.  The IOP connector hotels will be the closest ones to the race.

Riding course will be flat and fun out in the FM forrest with the run through Park West it will be good.  I have not yet driven into the KOA to look at the swimming lake yet but will try to get by in the next week.

I live in Rivertowne so it is a home course race for me.

Hello

You may want to try one of the Charleston Sprint Series races to start.  My first tri last summer was the late August race.

Water temp in the pond shouldn't be too cold by May.  If you do the sprint series, the water is warmer than a bath tub.  Only cold one in the area (relatively speaking, of course)is usually East Cooper Tri since it is open water and early in the season.

I'm in for the HIM.  Is it reasonable to assume wetsuit legal in early May?

Mike

I would say yes.  This race is the reason I purchased my wetsuit so I guess I need to practice in it a few times.

I rode 32 miles of the bike course this last weekend. It is nice. Seewee Rd, Doar Rd, Steed Creek Rd and Guerins Bridge Rd are all in beautiful shape. Beautiful surroundings with little traffic. Half Way Creek Rd isn't in so great of shape, but is rideable. 17N is a busy two lane highway and hopefully they will have a lane blocked off for us. I've run in Park West and Carolina Park too, so the run course will be nice. The big question mark is the swim venue. They are going to do two loops in the lake. I will have to go out and check it out.

I was told that it will be wetsuit legal but I bet it will be pretty close. If there are a couple of hot sunny days the inland lakes on the coast tend to warm up fairly quickly. I remember riding that area 25 years ago and the roads are amazingly flat. They should be protected from the wind by the pines that grew up after Hugo. It should be a fast bike ride.

Halfway Creek is pretty bad the further you north.  The rest will be fine.

I will go  scout the KOA camp ground tonight on the way home.  Maybe take a picture.

Hello

The run is the area where I ride every week. I am not sure how they are going to shut down the main road in Dunes/Park West.  Over all it will be a good run course.

The bike course has some roads that I have not ridden before because I dont ride on 17.  If we have one lane of 17 blocked this will be a very fast ride.

I did not make into the KOA until after dark tonight. The lake looks very big so I would think the swim could be a one loop swim.

I am headed to GA for the weekend so I will ride the bike course in my truck next week and give a full report.

If I understand the maps correctly we will also cross all lanes of 17.  That might get very interesting.

A few of us went up to the bike course after the Bridge Run this weekend.  We did all the sections that did not involve 17.  I think the roads were great but like b2673ad pointed out, Halfway Creek Rd. will rattle your jaw bones.  It is about 7.5mi according to USATF route tracker.  The other roads make up for it.

Someone mentioned crossing 17 was going to be interesting.  I agree.  Also, I saw a max elevation of 75 ft and a min of -7; barely noticeable.
