Subject: Help with swim training needed!
Hi everyone! I signed up for my first triathlon, the Aflac Iron Girl and a training program was included with the registration. I am very interested in doing this training, but the swim portion confuses me completely. I have never done any swimming for sport, so the wording on this training is not sinking in. Also, I'm wondering if this may be a bit advanced for a novice swimmer? The running and biking part seemed doable though. If anyone could explain this to me I would be appreciative. I'm also open to opinions on if this is even a good plan for a beginner. Thanks!

Examples of some of the 6 swims in week 1-4 of training:

Swim A: warmup 300 yards, 6 x 50 drill/choice on 10 sec rest, 3 x 500 tempo on 1 minute rest, cooldown 200 yards.

Swim E: warmup 400, 8 x 50 drill/choice on 10 second rest, 12 x 100 tempo on 15 sec rest, 500 pull, cooldown 200.

My main point of confusion is the drill and pull parts and what those mean.

Dunno about the program, but the "drill/choice" I would assume to mean a drill of your choice, be it kicking, closed fist, one arm, catchup etc.

"Pull" would be swimming with a pull buoy.

As to whether you can do the workouts or not, you'll just have to try them. If you have decent form you should be able to get through Swim A. Swim E looks a little harder. You could maybe increase the recovery to 20-25 sec if needed, or just to less repetitions of the 100s. You won't know until you try though, gl. :p

Have you ever swam in general for fitness before? Because those workouts are all above 2000m...I think you would have some difficulty getting up to that distance so quickly. Any chance you could swim with a local tri club or masters club for swimming? . Is the tri you are doing a sprint or oly?

As far as your specific questions:

Drills refer to swimming focused on technique--you would have to youtube them to see if you could find any--but examples are catchup freestyle, dog paddle, one arm free style, etc.

Pull refers to swimming while using a pull buoy. Its one of those foamy things that you put between your thighs to allow your bottom half to float while you swim only using your arms.

Set Explanation:

warmup 300 yards--swim at fairly easy pace for 300
6 x 50 drill/choice on 10 sec rest--swim drill for a 50 then take 10sec rest and do thhe next rep
3 x 500 tempo on 1 minute rest--tempo is a fairly high sustained effort
cooldown 200 yards--easy recovery pace

Oh ok, I didn't even know about the different drills! That clears things up quite a bit though. Thank you for your response. I am going to be starting the swimming tomorrow now that I have a pool to use. Thanks again!

Thank you for your response! I will be doing a sprint. I am joining my local tri club in the next couple of days and hopefully will get some swims in with them. The only swimming I have done has been for leisure. I know I can do 2-3 laps well enough, but it's been a while since I tried and I don't know the distance of each lap.

I would recommend keeping it simple at first.  Until you've built up a bit of stamina I'd say just jump in and start swimming laps.  Take breaks when you need to (which will be much more frequent at first).  You'll be surprised at how quickly you start to build endurance.  I wouldn't even be concerned with any drills at this point either.

Thanks! That sounds like a wise plan! I like your quote, Dexter is one of my favorite shows!

Another helpful site I recently found is Swimplan.  You enter your information and it creates workouts just for you.  Also, it describes the drills and sets pretty well. http://www.swimplan.com/
