Subject: cycling jersey v. tri jersey
Okay y'all I have been (still am?) a roadie for several years.
I will be riding my first Sprint Tri in May. So....I went to the LBS to try on some tri jerseys.
Uh yeah, did not like how they felt (Pearl Izumi brand)..they seemed "small".
So is "small' the nature of Tri jersey? (my mid-rift was bare).
What about wearing my cycling jersey? bad idea? personal preference?

You might want to look at a different brand of tri jersey.  Mine are still a bit shorter than my biking jerseys.  The problem with shirts other than tri jerseys is that when you come out of the swim anything is going to be hard to pull on over your wet skin, and will also take time to put on.

Yes, they are smaller and fit tighter.  You can still plan to wear your cycling shirt, though.  It won't be much of a problem wearing it on the swim under a wetsuit.  But, it will be harder to put on in T1 if you're wet and my cycling jerseys are not as comfortable to run in as a tri top.

Izumi is all over the map with sizing and cut. I have some of their stuff and love it, but you have to try it on first.

For me, I wouldn't want to swim in a bike jersey or try and put one on in transition when being wet. I'm sure it's possible to get one on but probably a pain...

As far as a tri jersey/top, don't limit yourself to just what the stores specifically call out as "tri tops" or "tri jersey". I've actually found I like underarmour technical stuff the best. I wear some of their sleeved shirts for training and when I race I wear a sleeveless top by them along with craft tri shorts (all that goes under my wetsuit, then just peel off the wetsuit and good to go, well you still need to put on shoes). The thing is most technical stuff has the same idea, wicking, won't sop up water, comfortable, less if any seems to prevent chafing etc.

I usually find technical stuff at sporting goods stores or even REI.

Hope this helps...

since its a sprint you might also want to consider a simple compression shirt.
works well for me.

good luck on your race!

For my first year doing tris I wore tight fitting sleeveless cycling jersey and it can work.

Are you wearing a wetsuit in your sprint? If yes then no problem wearing a bike jersey. If no wetsuit, try swimming in the top you think you might want to wear. If it is to loose it feels really weird and causes drag. Ideally don't plan on changing or putting clothes on in T1 as putting something tight or semi tight on wet body when winded is tough and wastes a ton of time.

If you go with a bike jersey, I would suggest going sleeveless.  I did a race once with a regular bike jersey, and by the end of the run (a sprint, so 5k), my arms were starting to have some abrasions and friction burn from the elastic sleeves.

There are looser fitting tri-tops; or you can always go up a size.

So many options.

I usually wear a TYR tri top for multisport events. Problem for me is that at T1 I have been know to do this dance to got the shirt over my head and on my body. The last tri I did in 2009, I decided to skip the tri top and use a cycling jersey with a full zipper. It did save me from doing the dance. I have since got a skin tight compression top which I may try this year. This might be good for using under my wetsuit.

What about just going topless for the bike/run, is that allowed for men?

First I'd try some different tri tops.  There are longer ones that will cover your mid-rift.

If you still want to wear a cycling jersey then either wear it for the swim or use a one with a full length zip.  Either way will solve the problem of it being difficult to put on.

Anything you plan to swim in should fit tight to cut down on drag in the water.  If you're wearing a (properly sized) wetuit, it'll take care of streamlining your torso during the swim.  No wetsuit?  Anything not skin-tight (and by this I mean not-skin-tight-when-wet) will sag and billow and otherwise frustrate you during a swim.  I'll put a shirt on in T1 (if you've practiced and know how it behaves as you try to put it on a wet body, it's much easier to deal with) and for a number of tri's, that shirt has been a bike jersey.  3/4 or full-zip is the way to go, not the 1/4 zip and definitely try running in it.

There are so many brands of triathlon gear you will be able to find something that works for you.

In the interim youve already got some great advice - Ive always just thrown on a loose cotton singlet that i train in in T1 but I know it slips on no problems over my wet body so just make sure you try it out first!

Or you can get a compression short sleeved technical shirt. Those work great, dry rather quickly and don't cause chaffing on the arms/chest.
