Don't hate me 'cause I win. That's the way it's done.

I hate people who keep bidding too far out from the end of the auction.

That's why you have to bid what you are willing to pay from the start.

If the sniper wants it that bad, then I make sure they paid too much (well, at least more than what I was willing to pay).

Yeah I don't get it either. It's proxy bidding. You put in a max price, and you won't be outbid. If you are doing it right, you should never bid more than once... (unless I'm missing something).

If I really want it, I snipe.

Sorry, there is too much advantage in sniping not to do it.

Possibly - it's the only one I've used, and I win about 75% of the auctions I bid on. One of the features I really like is the bid groups.

I haven't bought much on eBay recently but I normally use an online sniping program.  I can set when to put in the bid automatically (around 3 seconds before close) and my max bid.

The best part of the program is that I can group auctions together if I am looking for a particular article and, if I win one, it automatically cancels the future bids on any other items in the group.

That's one of the reasons I use Buy It Now almost exclusively. I hate the Johnny Come Latelies that bit at the last minute.

So when I do bid, I make my max a penny below the Buy it Now price. The snipers want it? Fine, they can pay more than they would had they taken advantage of early pickup.

I snipe all the time but mostly because I watch a few autions for the same thing and rather than bid on all I put in a snipe for what I want to pay.  If I get it great, if not I move to the next item on my watch list.

Don't hate the playa hate the game.

I am a sniper.  My problem is with dumbasses that don't understand that you DON'T bid at all until the last hour before it's up.  All you do when you bid 5 days ahead of time is raise the price.  It's all strategy.

I just don't understand why people have such an issue with snipers. If you were willing to pay more for the item than you put in your max bid, why didn't you have a higher max?

People that bid that way are looking for a bargain and hoping that they win. On the other hand, the most effective sniping strategy is to decide exactly how much you're willing to pay for an item, put that as your max, and then submit the bid as late as possible. That way, you're bidding to win and hoping for a bargain. Submitting any bid that's below your actual max just doesn't make sense.

The other major advantage to sniping is that you don't get sucked into "just $1 more" battles. You pick your max, you put that in, and you don't have time to convince yourself to spend more than your max.

Plus, this is nothing new.  While the strategies in a live auction are different, they are just a prevelant.

Hiding good items so they go at the end of the day.  Trashing an item while a spouse bids.  Domination bids to drive off competition.  Hiding bids from those around you.  Driving up the price of similar items to drain money from the system or frustrate the other bidders.  Quick bids, slow bids.  All of them are valid live auction tactics.
