Subject: HR spike during run?
Just wondering if anyone has had a similar experience.

I was five miles into my six mile run today and my HR shot up from a steady 160 to 177 and stayed that high until I stepped off the treadmill (about 1min 30sec at 177).  The overall run was slow, 10 min/mile, but I had six hills in the middle.  I know the HR monitor wasn't malfunctioning because I could feel my pulse was way up, but what could cause this?

I'm only on a winter maintenance plan right now and haven't been training particularly hard yet.  Once my heart rate was back around 160 I got back on and finished up my run with no ill effects afterward.

I'm planning on just ignoring it but just thought I would throw it out there and see what anyone else has to say.  Thanks.

What was your breathing like? Looks like you went into oxygen debt during your run. Happens to me sometimes when I am on the dreadmill. Running on the road, never seen it happen to me yet.

Very normal response if you were doing hills in the middle and right before it spiked. Unless you slow down on hills it will spike. Also, it will normally go up towards the end of your workouts, but especially with hills. Just do what you did and slow down and it will go back to normal.

My breathing was actually relaxed and felt good as I was almost done with the run, so the spike in my heart rate didn't seem to match up with how I was feeling.  I also had been in "cool down" for about 1.5 miles already and was just enjoying the rest of the run.

The fact that it went away as soon as I stepped off led me to not worry too much, but thanks for the input as always.

Did a hot chick walk into the gym?

Maybe your body was punishing you for running on the treadmill?

More seriously, HR creep up is normal during longer runs.  I'm not sure whether this run would constitute that for you.  And I see it wasn't really a creep as opposed to a jump.  I wouldn't worry about it at all, especially if it's an isolated incident.

If you were running at home in a 10x10 room without decent ventillation.... you could have run low on oxygen in the air in the room.

Combination of hydration, heat, duration, intensity could have beat you up for a bit there otherwise.  You might want to take note of how frequently it happens... in case there is something else going on, but probably just a bunch of stuff tellingyour heart to bump up for a bit.

Fatigue load can also screw up HR.  I did some LT repeats in a run this week after a hard race last week and it took a good 20 minutes for my breathing and HR to drop down even though my effort and pace were clearly zone 1 after I was done with the repeats.  Also HR climbed faster and higher than it normally does at that physical effort.  My body is just not fully recovered from the race yet... so rest day today.

Oh, or you could have a touch of a cold or something that can screw up your HR even though your symptoms are mild.
