Hi San Diego People:

I'll be down there in early April for a long weekend and I'm looking for some ow swimming locations. We're staying on Mission Bay at Paradise Point (North Cove). The last time we were there we saw a lot of kayakers and rowers but I don't remember any swimmers.

Also, advice on Tri shops in the area is appreciated as well.

Thanks!

Jeff

Paradise Point is right across the street from the location of the Mission Bay Triathlon.  It is a bit hectic to swim there with all of the boat traffic, but I think it can be done.  If you're coming down in April, you'll most likely want your wetsuit.  The water temp is about 57° right now.

La Jolla Cove is probably the best spot in San Diego for OW swimming (will be there tomorrow!).  While parking near the Cove can be tough, there's a marked swim channel with buoys at 1/4 and 1/2 mile for reference.  A more accessible spot is La Jolla Shores (was there Monday), but there's really no clearly defined swim lanes. We usually just head out southwest towards the Cove.  It's just under a mile from Cove to Shores.  If you Google these two spots, you should get a pretty good idea of the area.

If you're going to be in Mission Bay, you're not far from B+L Bike and Sport in the Sports Arena area and Moment Cycle Sport out on Rosecrans in Pt. Loma.

Great, thanks for all the info. I'll check out the 2 swimming holes you mentioned and I will certainly bring the wetsuit and other gear though I'm sure I'll get the "you're not training are you we're SUPPOSED to do family stuff!" look. Can't wait to get there, I need a break...

Cool. So...a long weekend in April, huh? I should mention that the Tri Club and XTERRA Wetsuits host free OWS events on Mondays (Shores) and Fridays (Cove) now that daylight savings time is here.  They usually start around 5:30-5:45 P.M. with toes in the water at 6.  If either one fits into your schedule, I would highly recommend planning your swim around one (or both) of these times.  It would be a good opportunity to hit the water with a lot of other folks.  I don't know about you, but I always feel a bit safer when I'm one of many in the water as opposed to one of just a few.

The Cove is great for swimming. Mission Bay has a lot of boat traffic and if you're not swimming in a designated "swim" area you may end up getting a ticket from lifeguards.

I'll speak to the people at the hotel and see what they say. Seem like it would be safe to swim parallel to shore but I don't know, they rent PWC there too. Probably end up going to the cove but it would be nice to go out of the room and start swimming. There's always the pool too...though not as fun.

Try Del Mar (Sunda am), and Fletchers Covve (Fri am).  Always a swim followed by breakfast at a local restaurant.

Nytro is a pretty good tri shop also.  (Nytro.com)
