Subject: TriAmerica series reviews?
Just did one of the TriAmerica series races yesterday and I wasn't at all impressed with the organization, planning, value, or safety of the race overall. Wondering if there are other folks out there with similar/different experiences. The short version: $85 got me a T-shirt, finisher medal, small pizza, and some soda (along with water and Gator on the course). Not even so much as a Power Bar or gel sample in my race bag. There was broken glass in the chute on the beach leading to T1, the bike dismount area was a mess because they had sprint and Oly racers on the course together and there were people dismounting while others were trying to zip by for lap 2 on the bike. The run (10k) was extremely boring and lacked any creativity...a 2.5 mile straight line out with a ~1mile loop on the ned then back the same 2.5mile death march. The bike course was marked fairly well but it hit some major roads and we had to contend with cars. I actually had to out-sprint a van that didn't seem to care I was even there. Apparently a big fire engine pulled out behind some poor girl and blaster the siren causing her to veer off the road, into the curb and flip over a fire hydrant. Oh yeah, the first wave of swimmers headed off towards the wrong buoy and not one of the boats or kyaks bothered to redirect them for a good 5min. Finally someone sent them in the right direction but they were already 300m off course. We couldn't believe how long theylet them swim the wrong direction.Okay, I'm done complaining...wish my first Oly race was a better experience. Hopefully the crew at Piranha Sports does a better job with Diamond in the Rough in 3 weeks.

My thoughts for the same race but sprint distance. I liked the organization of the transition area, everyone had their own spot clearly marked, as well as signs for bike start, bike finish, run start, so you could plan your transition strategy. I'm not sure how or why the first wave of swimmers got so off course, but they should have sent people out there sooner to redirect. There was a small group that did swim the course the right way to begin with. There was traffic on the bike course, but I thought it was pretty well controlled. Since I only had one lap of the course to ride there were fewer chances for problems. The run course really didn't bother me, again I only had a 5K. I can't remember how much I paid for the sprint distance, but I know it was less than $85. The "goodie" bags were definitely lacking, as was the post race food. I had a great race, my best tri yet. I'll be intersted in hearing from others who have done these tri's in other cities.

Hmm, I didn't experience any of the problems you guys described when I did the Orlando TriAmerica last year. I thought it was one of the best organized races- with a great expo to boot. I hope when I do the Miami TriAmerica in October it's not what you guys described. Maybe they changed management.

That's another thing.  They claimed there would be a "Festival of Sports and Fitness" on Saturday...there was nothing at 2pm when we arrived to get our packets.

I'm registered for TriAmerica Irving July 3rd, and traveling 9 hours to do it...I pray it isn't as bad as you described yours.

Hopefully it was just this stop on the series...or maybe it was just a single bad day.  Give us an update after your race and let us know if it was any better.

As far as I know Triamerica is still organized by SommerSports? They do the the Central Fl series & I did their Triamerica Sprint in April. That race organization was fine w/no problems other than unruly cold, blustery weather. SommerSports does an excellent job w/the C Fl series from an organizational perspective. So, hopefully yours is an isolated event...I experienced the same this weekend w/the Sarasota Publix FFW series - poor organization but I hear good things about their other race venues.

I did the Tri America Olympic last year in New Orleans. I would say they over promised and undelivered. The course itself was fine however the festival of sport and expo promised weren't there, the bottle swap for the olympic distance was an empty ice chest on the side of the road and dispite a small field they were missing many of the awards. I have heard folks who have done Clermont races say lots of good things but the traveling series seems to still have hiccups.
