Subject: Best way to maintain half mary fitness
Hi everyone!

I have a half marathon planned for this Saturday and a half iron planned for mid-September.  My training for that half iron begins April 25, just two weeks away.  Obviously, I'm not going to really follow the run build for that plan, so I'm curious about suggestions on how to maintain the distance for the next 5 months.

TIA!

If your logs are correct (I didn't look closely, but did pull a monthly mileage graph for this year), you're on a very low mileage plan for your half mary.  To maintain fitness until your HIM, run at least as much as you're doing now, though preferably more if possible!

Yeah, logs are not fully up-to-date.  This is not my first (or second...or third....or) half and I'm aware that my mileage is low for this.

I was thinking of a long run every other week, on top of 2-3 short runs through the week.  Maybe a 10 miler every other week.

Thoughts?

What are your short runs? What are your goals? To maintain my run fitness throughout the year I typically do a 4-5 mile up tempo run or hill repeats, a 5-6 mile trail run and a 9-10 mile LSD run weekly which means 18-21 mpw. If I do much less than this I struggle with anything over the 11 mile mark.

Someone once told me to run at least 20 miles a week all year to maintain a certain level of run fitness.  That's probably enough to maintain HM fitness.

In my case my maintenance running plan (which is also happens to be my triathlon training plan) is 3 runs per week.  One 6 mile with some intervals, one 6 mile with some tempo, and one 10 mile long run (sometimes easy, sometimes fairly intense for a long run).  When tired or feeling aches I reduce or drop completely any intensity and just run easy rather than reducing total mileage.

Yep. Since my first half mary back in December I try to maintain 20 to 22 miles per week.  I typically follow a 6-10-4 pattern, but sometimes lengthen the long run to 11 or 12.

I think if you maintain 25 mpw (35 in the peak weeks before the HIM), and with a long run of about 10 miles once per week, you will be fine.

LOL.

Thanks all.  I wasn't sure if a 10 miler would be needed once a week or once every other.

Good stuff.
