sungirl919 - 2010-05-12 3:24 PM As a newbie, I'll ask the professionals---

how on earth will you stay warm on the bike after being in that water?  I want to practice with the wetsuit and my transitions, but I do believe I will have to change into a snowsuit, wool hat, mittens, and long underwear (not in that order) for the bike in order to keep my body warm!!!  What are your tricks?

Suffer.  At least that's what I do.  As of now I plan on changing out of my suit and putting on bike shorts though.  I hate riding in wet shorts and 71 isn't warm enough to dry everything out by the run.  It's too early in the season to get crotch rot.

I'm bringing New World salad and Greek Salad.  Maybe some hummus and pita chips as well.

I might convince my David to join us on the bike- he pushes at 12mph so Mett you will NOT be the slowest of the pack!

Arm warmers and full fingered gloves will make for a more pleasant ride. At my last IM last year the temp was about 45* at the start of the swim. I had cut the toes out of some sweatsocks and used shose as arm warmers for the bike. I intended to throw them off at an aid station but ended up wearing them the entire ride. My legs were just fine as they were doing the work.

I am 80% on making it out there. I will def do the bike ride, still 50/50 on the swim. I will guage the temp and also see how I am feeling.

Being experienced in doing it the WRONG way - i'll offer up what I learned from my mistakes.

Non vented soles in the shoes are in order (if you have an option)
Wear socks - water wicking.
If you have shoe covers you could wear them.  I don't have any and wouldn't in a tri so I don't.

If it is really cold some gloves would be good.  - I actually go for loose fitting disposable biodegradeble cloth gardening/work gloves.  - that way it is easy to get them on and off and if need be you can jettison them.

I do not cover my legs ever in a race but if i enter another cold race i would have a shirt ready.  The energy saved from freezing is well worth the time to put it on.

because this is a training ride I may slip tights on over my tri shorts.  I will most assuredly wear a biking shirt - short sleeve, half zipper, rear pockets.  i may wear a more substantial shirt.  i will stick cotton in my ears.

if you are riding hard - you don't notice the cold other than ears, toes and fingers I have found.

I love my LG Tri Air 2's for that exact reason- two types of inserts.  One that allows your foot to breathe/dry out and the warm inserts for cold days.  I'm not ashamed to say I got them on sale from Performance Bike either

I've been thinking-  I was at Alum with my kinds, hubby and dog on Mother's Day.  After walking in the beach and grass, we came home with ten friends that we did not bring to the beach.  Those, my friends, would be ticks

Are we planning on actually having the transitions in the grass or in the parking lot?  I don't want to pick any more of these off of my body...  YUCK!

Well I am sad to say, I am out now. Just found out that we have to cart the two kiddoes around to a few events tomorrow that we didn't know about. Sorry about that, I was looking forward to meeting some new folks and seeing old friends.

I'll be at alum at 7:30 (or 40)

I will not be able to cookout because Lily has her last soccer game at 12:30.  Sorry - I wanted to do the cookout to get to know a few of you better.  The game ends at 1:30.  If you think people will be around a while past that, I could come up with the girls for a beer.   They love beer.

Water temp as of 2 am is 61.2 degrees! Sixties sound a whole lot better than the 50s. LOL!

Train safe and have a great time everyone.  Sorry I can't be there.  Got to stay home and get myself healthy again, but I'll be thinking of you all!

Ohhh, hot tub temp!

Alice and I are leaving in a few minutes. We'll be in a black truck. We're going to park in the southernmost part of the lot as we can. (Sometimes the south part of the lot is closed)

It was a success! If I set up another one later this summer I think we'll do the post race food at the beach. That way the kids and SO's can play at the beach while we train.
Thanks everyone for coming out.

Thanks for the organization, invitation and keeping track of the slower-pokes (er..me). The pink speedos were an excellent beacon on the road! And I appreciate that it's for a good cause.

is Deer Creek going to be that cold in June?  I may have hurry up and get the wetsuit. After all, once Brue has determined it is a necessary expense...

I've never swam in AC with it being that COLD before.  I did swim in it May 30th last year and thought it was cold but not stupid cold like yesterday was.

Here's a historic water temp graph:  http://www.lrh-wc.usace.army.mil/wq/acs_tem_avg.jpg/>
In July and Aug it was almost *too* warm to swim close to the beach and I had to go out by the markers. (which should be in place memorial day weekend)

I think I am going out to get a wetsuit though.  I want the extra speed.

Sounds like you all had a great time! Wish I could've made it and met some new people, but hopefully next time. If anyone decides to do an OWS anytime soon for practice, let me know. I'd like to have a buddy for my first time out trying it. Hopefully before June 5th...my first mini-Tri.
