Subject: Mtn Bike pedals.....Tri shoe?
I didn't know how far I wanted to go with tri's (still don't).  So, I had my LBS put mtn bike clipless pedals on my roadie (so I could use the same shoes).

I now see that the MTB shoes will take a little extra time in T1 (the top strap is a ratchet system).  Maybe not a big deal, but I'm wondering if there's a more tri-friendly shoe that utilizes mtb (shimano speed cleats) pedals????

Look for a shoe that is 2-hole compatible and you will be fine. I use Lake shoes. They are very reasonable priced and very comfortable with and without socks.

I also use SPD's on my tri bike. I've seen several tri-shoes that take SPD's. Just look around and you'll find them. I'm still using my MTB shoes, but they are velcro straps, easy on, easy off.

My husband has tri shoes (I think they are Shimano brand) that have holes for either mtb or road cleats. He has some balance issues due to previous brain tumor and loss of his balance nerve so he rides mtb pedals.

I didn't even think about velcro MTB shoes.  Thanks.  I'll check into ones that feel comfy enough for use without socks.....if I plan to go that route.

My Carnac tri shoes have multiple mounting points for cleats. I think LG shoes have it as standard as well.

Specialized makes a MTB shoe with 3 velcro staps.  I have a pair and really like them.

You can buy any shoes you want--you just need the cleats to match your pedals. They do sell adaptor kits if you have a three-hole shoe but two hole pedals.

I have shimano shoes with the two SPD holes. They are marketed as mtn bike shoes but I love them because of the three velcro straps to make getting in and out easy.

For 3 years I've used Lake mtn bike shoes -- 1 velcro strap and I put elastic laces in the eyelets -- very fast transitions and no socks required.  I like that I can run in them to/from bike mount/dismount.

I have Shimano M086L shoes.  M is for mountain, and it's the exact same shoe as the R086L which is a road shoe.  Both have that ratchet strap on top, but the bottom two are velcro.  I got these because the "cleats" of the mtn version will allow me to run through T1 without the slickness of the road or tri shoes.  I have more to worry about than how fast I can put on my shoes, though.

I have an old pair of tri shoes that I put SPD's on for spin class.  Just find a shoe that's compatable (like everyone has said) and you are golden.

Curious why you want to go that route?  Speed play are double sided entry as well.  That may be an option.
