Subject: So I set out for my bike ride....
and after less than a mile I hear a scratching sound each time my front wheel rotates..

HOLY CRAP!! not what i need.. So I stop.. unclip.. and spin the wheel around..

I've run over some gum. and the gum has some rocks stuck to it..

so I spend the next few minutes picking the gum off with some leaves from the nice peoples yard that I was stopped in front of...

continue on for another 200 or so yards.. more scratching.. this time..rear wheel.. same story there..

Any danger running over gum? I was a little worried and tried to make sure I cleaned as much of it off as I could so rocks wouldn't get stuck on it and poke at the tire every time it rolled over..

Sounds like you've already discovered the danger - it's all the OTHER crap that gets stuck to it, like rocks.  Now stop asking stupid questions, I need to get back over to the confessions thread........
