Subject: bike calorie burn?
So, I rode 25 mi this morning and my garmin 405 (set to bike mode) says I burned 1500 calories??? This can't be correct. I'm 6' 3" and 180 lbs...surely its less than that. No heart monitor used, just the input info on the garmin. Does anyone else have this problem? What's an accurate calorie burn? Thanks!

I go to calorie count and when i did 24 miles last week and showed that i burned 1400 calories. I;m 5"11 163lbs. I would say that was pretty close to being correct.

If you want to guesstimate your caloric expenditure for cycling, I would go with:

.35Cal/kgkm

So, for your ride you are looking at ~1150Cal.

This site might be good for an estimate.  A lot of factors go into it (actual pace, hills etc.)

Your speed and how much you climbed have a big effect on calories burned.

Thanks everyone. I averaged 20 mph today, how much effect does that have?

My guess is your garmin is going to be close, although I suspect it might be a bit high. How much elevation gain?

Another good rule of thumb is 7-10 calories per minute of exercise, depending on your level of effort.

But Shane, wouldn't a higher HR for example result in a greater caloric cost?

Garmin's suck at elevation, they have no built in altimeter.

This is actually a misnomer.  Calories burned has far, far more to do with distance traveled (and hills) than it does with speed... so say the experts... which I am not one of.  Whether you bike 20 miles on a given course in an hour or in 1:15... all other things being equal (wind, corse, equipment, etc) you will burn about the same calories.  It's the same with running btw.

according to my pm last year, zn2 riding would put me right around 550 an hour or so,

i would not trust most HR monitor based ones.

Yes, but then you would travel farther which would increase the caloric expenditure in the equation I provided.  The literature would indicate that the typical caloric expenditure for cycling is going to be around .3-.4Cal/kgkm and almost all (I think I've seen two or three files where this didn't work) power files I have seen would bear this out.  For a rough idea for those without a PM, I suggest just using .35Cal/kgkm.

thats pretty much the neighborhood that I"m in for calories by my PM also.

I can't remember if the OP posted how long it took him but a close non metric "guess" would be around 500-600 per hour burned

I think if I had some tests to figure out what my HR zones were that my 305 would be more accurate. I also think that it overestimates the calories burned but I just cut some off and I'm probably pretty close.

Do you by chance have a per pound-mile calculation for us Americans? Tongue out  Yes I realize 1kg=2.2lb and 1.6km=1mi but a single number like .35 seems so much easier and much less to calculate.... Undecided
