Subject: I'm new from Utah
I've signed up for my first triathlon for late August. I'm also training for a marathon this year. I've been running consistently for a month now (4 times/week) and am looking forward to my first 1/2 marathon on June12th. I'm trying to set some other event goals that will help keep me on track and I came up with a question: would it be suicide to do a half marathon a week before my first triathlon? How much tapering is wise for a tri? Please advise!! Thanks!

Hi and welcome!

I do nothing 3 days before a race, 4-7 days days before a race I'll do some light runs.
As to doing a 1/2M a week before your first Sprint - that depends on what shape you're in. If running 20km is a regular training day for you and you're not trying to set a PB that week, then it should not be a problem.

It sounds like you re doing the Utah Marathon?  I will be there as well.  It will be my first half mary (this is year 2 for tri's)   I think the others said it good.  If you are to the point that 13 miles isn't going to take it all out of you than sure why not.  Just make sure you give yourself a good taper form there.  If 13 is really pushing yourself then you may want to decide which race is most important to you.

I'm new from Utah as well I suppose.  I've kinda been lurking on this site now for a couple weeks.  I competed in my first tri April 3rd at SHAC here in St. George.  I loved it and plan to do many more.  I am signed up for the SGTri May 15th and hope to do well there.  I am very competitive and seeing how this is a race, it's right up my alley.  I've gone from 242lbs. down to 182lbs. in the last year and plan to be in the 170's for my "race weight" hopefully soon.

By the way, my name is David

Wow! Nice job - that's a lot of weight to drop. Very impressive!
