Okay, so I thought I would put this out to the forum. It is definitely racing season as there are too many races going on the same day.

My options are either an open water swim race or a bike criterium race. The races take place on Canada Day, Friday July 1st, so this is a stat holiday and I won't be working all weekend.

Here's a bit more details about each:
The open water swim race is $40. There is an option to do either the 1km, 2km or 4km race. I believe that I could do any of the distances, though the 4km would be more of a challenge. The people who do this race are generally swimmers not triathletes, so times are fast. MOP for the 4km race is under 1 hour. I'm a little better than a 2min/100m swimmer over a distance. The shorter the distance, the more "non"-swimmers that register. I've done the 2km race in 2003 and 2004. In 2003 I finished BOBOP (okay close to DFL), in 2004, I was BOMOP/MOP.

The criterium is a large race that goes through Yaletown in Vancouver. There will be a lot of spectators and really nice prizes. There will also be lots of good cat 4 female racers there, but I've been racing criteriums once a week since the beginning of May, so I should be able to keep up with the pack, though I probably won't win or win a prime, so it's not likely I'll win a prize. I would lean towards this race, but the downside is the cost. The race cost $35, but I don't have a license, so I'd have to buy a 1-day race license. The one day licenses are $10 or $30 depending on which one I need. I'm not sure which one I need so I should phone and find out at lunch time today. I will update the thread when I do find out the cost of the license.

The swim starts at 8:00am and the bike race starts at 1:30pm. I could probably do both races, but then I might be too tired for the bike race. I might not be though.

What do you all think?

Thanks,
Jen

Jen,

What a great dilemma. When I read your post, I get really mad at myself for not discovering triathlon when I lived in Vancouver. We lived at UBC and saw the crits there all the time but didn't conceive of ever doing anything like that. The best we ever did was ride down to the beach to watch the fireworks shows. Anyway, I always pick the bike over swimming but I think you can do both. Just remember to rehydrate after the swim.

have fun,

Hey Laura,

I'll do the swim with you! Sasamat Lake is a good first OW swim. DrLeah and I and some other friends go out and practice on Wednesday nights at the same lake. You're welcome to join us.

Hmm, what are you goals as a Triathlete?  Which race would be benificial for you to compete in.  Sounds like you have experience in both disciplines.   Which area needs the work?

If you are a Triathlete, do both.

Yeah, Vancouver is a great city for racing. There are two crit series now. Tuesday night at UBC and Thursday night in Richmond. I've been doing the Thursday night series because I've been swimming on Tuesdays, but if I decided to do the Yaletown race, I will probably do the Tuesday night race instead of Thursday this week. You don't need a license to do the club races (Tuesday and Thursday nights) which is why I don't have one. I plan to do more bike racing next year.

So it seems as if most people are leaning towards both. I think I am too, but it's going to be a lot of money for 1 day. Either $85 or $105 bucks. I don't know if that's in my budget. (Maybe it is though.)

I didn't cast a vote, but I hope this helps...Matt Fitzgerald writes in COMPLETE TRIATHLON BOOK, "Avoid racing when you don't have a good reason to race. There's no point in crossing the finish line unless you intend to give it full effort...You should have a clear sense of the purpose of your racing each time out. There are three distinct purposes 1) those in which you hope to achieve a peak-level performance 2) those in which you hope to perform your best, but are not timed to coincide with peak performance, and 3) those that you do for the sake of developing your race sharpness in anticipation of a coming peak race." Of course the decision is yours, and you know what's best for you. Good luck whatever you decide. Hope this helps.

Okay, so it's been confirmed that a 1-day license for the Yaletown Grand Prix will only cost me $10, so it's $45 to race. I think I will sign up for this, though I am a bit nervous. If I sign up for this, then I think the 4km swim is out.

Sorry Joel,

I can't be your hero or nobody's for the matter. I registered for the Yaletown race and went to register for the 2km swim race, but it was full. So no swim race for me.

I'll do the 2km at the same loop tonight. Good luck Laura.
