Yep.

A couple weeks ago I decided too late to turn and did it too quickly. Some loose gravel quickly put me and my bike on our side for a nice little slide. Ouch! Elbow still looks pretty nasty.

This same ride I also joined the club of falling while stopped because I didn't unclip. I was passing a rider coming the other way when I realized he wanted to ask me something, so I again stopped a bit too quickly and didn't have a chance to unclip. Didn't go all the way over, but quite embarrassing nonetheless with another rider right there.

I'm sure there will be more.  I've only started riding this year.

In MTB-land, if you aren't crashing once in a while, you're riding too slow. Spend enouh time on a bike, and you'll have an incident/accident sooner or later. It's inevitable. You do have some control over how much risk you take, but cycling is a risky activity. It's just not as risky as sitting on the couch eating chips and drinking beer.

Yeah, it's when I come home from my ride that I really live on the edge.

So i guess i need to suck it up and get ready to fall? Maybe i should just sit on my bike in the middle of the road and fall over to take the shock out of it the first time...hehe.

If you haven't fallen having trouble getting out of your clipless pedals....get a few friends and do it a couple of times, then you'll be over the embarassment and you'll be able to laugh about it for a long time. It really is pretty funny, as it all seems to happen in slow motion...while you're thinking..Oh S*(t.....!

My last crash: Caught my front wheel in the gap between a concrete curb and the road surface. The wheel wedged in, the bike stopped and I went over the front. It took me a couple of minutes to clear my head and get untangled. Had some pretty good road rash and cuts on my right side. Fortunately, other than some scratches & scrapes the bike was okay and I was able to ride it home.
I've had a couple of close calls recently, both due to sand that had washed onto the edge of the road due to recent rains - lots of fishtailing and sliding. One was pretty scary as I thought I was going to fall in front of an oncoming car.

Both elbows and knees are kissed with road rash at the moment. New clipless pedals. 3 falls attributed to that and one to the moron who thought blowing the stop sign Monday was a hoot and a half.

No kidding! It is always when I have one foot unclipped and the other clipped in. For some reason I lean towards the clipped foot! I look like an idiot because the fall is so darn slow. My husband keeps joking about my wearing my Rollerblading gear when I go out but I don't see him riding with clipless pedals : )

Let's see 1...2...3....4....5....6..you get the point. The guy in my next cube had his MB chain come off and locked the rear wheel. Road rash and bruise city. 1 pedal dug into his knee. I've had 9 stiches and a dislocated finger from clipless pedals.

I've been riding mtn.bikes for a long time so I've long since lost track of all the crashes. I've managed a few pretty spectacular tumbles on the road too since those are usually faster. Only a couple of shoulder seperations, a few fingers and one knee dislocation, some minor abrasions, and lots of ruined clothing as consequences so far though. Oh, and going over backwards off a climb one time, I landed on a following mtn.bike and tacoed his wheel. Oops, almost forgot a face plant in the gravel once that pushed my glasses down my face and caused the cross piece to act like a cheese slicer on the bridge of my nose. Needed stitches for that one. And... and maybe that's enough for now, if not too much information already.

Sign me up for TWO.  Once the first time I rode with the clipless, once about 6 months thereafter, sudden unexpected stop, loose gravel yada yada yada.....no injuries either time, so I was basically laughing my ass off.  Hey, what can I say, I find a 40 year old woman falling off her bike funny.

MTB, just endo'd on Saturday, and has kept me off the bike for several days because of it.

Off road, I always say that if you don't crash every now and then....your not trying had enough!

I started riding in February and haven't fallen yet.

But I'm getting my first clipless pedals TONIGHT, so I may join RRA (Road Rash Anonymous) within the week.

You know what they say - there are two types of riders:  Those who have crashed and those who are going to crash.

I've fallen a couple times, all of the more embarrassing kind like falling over while still clipped in, or trying to get going and foot slipping off the pedal, things like that.  Of course, there was that one time I had that endo mtn biking.  Fortunately into a soft patch of weeds.  No road rash but ripped my shorts all to he**.  Again fortunately, I was riding with a jacket, so I could get back to my car without flashing everyone.

I am the proud owner of chainring gouges on the outside of my right leg, and the inside. I had wanted a new tattoo, but then I got these by falling over in my front yard whilst trying to clip in and ride off.
VERY cool. The outside of my leg...don't ask me how I got cut there, but the gouges were so deep that I probably should've gotten stitches. No need for a tattoo now.

And then there was the other time on the driveway when the big truck pulled in and just kept coming at me so I tried to ride off the gravel and into soft sand....and then there was the time on the road where I tried to stop and....

I have no doubt that with a little care and luck, people can ride thousands of miles or an entire lifetime without injury. However, if you have room on your training rides for a small first-aid kit...

Edit: Seriously, almost no one will have a bandage, or disinfectant wipes, or anything, but I've seen them come in handy more than once.

On my mtb I fell off a ledge and down a steep hill, my bike followed me and hit me, not once, but twice in the head. Handlebars and then tires. I kept that helmet for a long time just to look at the dent and the tread marks.

Over the years from various crashes I've gotten a nice set of assorted scars on my elbows, one set of stitches in my hip, and a fractured collarbone.

One weekend I crashed on a Saturday in a group ride.  Wet roads, and I slid out on a turn.  On Sunday I went out with my husband and an old friend of his.  The friend and I went more miles, and all the way back we were riding side by side.  We hooked handlebars and down I went again.  The 2nd crash was worse then the first because I totally trashed my front wheel.  How I got back to my mother in law's house I have no idea.

Two types of cyclists:

Those who have crashed, and those who are going to crash.

Sure - two weeks ago. Have some nice pics of it at www.bernicky.com about 3/4 of the way down the page. Road rash is just part of cycling.
