Well, I have yet to crash because my prime directive is: "Do Not Fall." Yes, I know that one of these days I will, and I'm kind of a wimpy rider because of my prime directive.

I even clipped one leg out at a narrow tri turn around point recently. As I slowed waaay down and clipped out, I said to the volunteer that I'm not very good with the turns. He replied not to worry, they just had a guy go through the turn, and took a tumble.

But I do have a question about falling (not the falling because you're clipped in). If you go down hard, or over your handlebars, do you stay clipped in?

Cycling is a risky activity. It's just not as risky as sitting on the couch eating chips and drinking beer.

That's going in the Random Quotes right now!!!

I have found that it depends on the crash.  I've had some where both feet have popped out.  The crash where I fractured my collarbone only one foot popped out.  The hard fast crashes you tend to pop out.  Slower crashes I've found I've stayed partially clipped.

Though I had one crash where I got hit from behind by a guy sprinting at 30 MPH.  He was not looking up and plowed right into me as I was rolling along at 20 MPH.  I went flying off the bike with such force that my shoe snapped in 1/2. 1/2 the sole where the cleat was, stayed attached to the pedal, the rest of the shoe was on my foot.  The other foot released completely.  I was glad the shoe snapped otherwise I'm sure I would have broken a bone similar to a ski accident where your binding doesn't release.

Put me down for at least 6. 5 were on my road bike. In 4, I couldn't get unclipped quick enough to regain balance. The 5th, a car pulled out in front of me. I slid across the hood of the car .... with my bike. Ended up doing a nice shoulder roll with shoes still in clips until the handle bars hit the pavement. The 6th, was a MTB accident. The usual endo landed on the outstretched hand and recieved a wonderful FOOSH fracture and ligament tear. in a cast for 6 weeks for the break and 4 months for the pinned ligaments. To say the least....haven't ridden the MTB much since then. That was in 2000.

Toppled over once when learning to ride clipless, then almost exactly one month ago took a corner to fast and got intimite with the concrete.  Separated shoulder is getting better, but still have the road rash scars on my elbow and upperthigh.

I found out later that my handlebars AND rear skewer got bent up.  My TYR tri shorts made it with only one small tear tho...I've become a loyal customer!
