Thanks Mark for freaking me out even more! I am scared of sharks too, got any stories about them?

Those jellyfish are probably harmless, we call them cabbage heads or cannon balls. They don't sting and are just a little unnerving when you hit one. Stay behind someone, let them plow them out of the way

HumanVelocity - 2010-06-17 9:18 AM One big tip for everyone in this race. If you have a back pocket to put your goggles in for the run and bike portions, do so. Transition area for the second swim is like trying to find a needle in a haystack. Just ditch ur shoes, forget the cap, and put on the goggles.

Great advice but one small error. YOU HAVE TO put your cap back on to start swimming the last leg safty issues.

Hey...that was my plan!!  Can we ditch our shoes anywhere?  And in the Utube video I saw people still wearing their race# belts heading to the swim - please tell me you don't have to have your race number on for the finish.....

For short races, I just put my race belt on at the beginning of the race, and tuck it into my tri shorts. Then just remember to pull it out when needed. Won't work if you have a one piece tri suit.

Last year I'm pretty sure we did not have to wear our race number to cross the finish line but maybe they had to in previous years.

Okay.. so I emailed SetUp this morning and this was the reply.  Now we know!

Swim caps must be worn during both swims.  This is a safety issue, we need to be able to see your head during the swim.

No race number needed during the finish of the second swim.  You only need the run number during the 2 run segments of the event.

Yes, there is a timing mat you hit before the second swim.  You will drop your shoes at the Beach TA.  Each person has a spot at the beach ta.

Thanks,
Benji Jones

Too expensive for me, but then I'm comfortable with ocean swims.

Oh and there is more race info up on the SetUP site.

Well, my BF has to work until 9 p.m. Friday, so we were not planning on getting to Kure until Saturday afternoon.   I think we're going to have to skip the clinics.  I don't know; we've been known to leave for the beach at 6 a.m., so we could make it to the 8:00 a.m. session if we REALLY wanted to.  But it says only room for 20 so it may be full by now.

This is my first ocean swim, plus I'm doing the Pier-to-Pier 2 mile swim this fall, so I sure would have liked to do a clinic.

But what could take 3 hours to teach?  I assume they'll teach the dolphin dive method of getting through the breakers, but once you're out there it's just a swim.  You have to contend with the waves, which I assume you just ignore and keep going.

John... you said you are staying at same hotel, perhaps we can exchange phone numbers and meet up sometime Saturday evening and you can fill us in on what you learned?

Maria  you will be fine. Just walk as far or run as you cannot not stand  and start to swim normally. No need to dolphine dive and waste energy. This tri is a energy sapping tri  because its fast and hot and technical. Jus make sure you hyrdated and take  your last energy boosting item before you start the run or the beging of the run on the way down to the beach  for the swim.

Ok, Martin.  I did make a couple of trips to the ocean in the past month, so I have an idea what I'm for.  My biggest concern is being out of breath from the run going into the second swim.

I don't normally use energy boosting products on a sprint distance, but perhaps I will for this one.  I guess I need to decide what, when, and how much.  I would normally use Infinit and/or GU gel.

What are ya'll doing for nutrition?

I  would take a Gel with highest % of caffine or what really works is those small 5 hour energy drinks. Just stick it in the back pocket of your tri top. They will give you a boost for sure

Ginger (aka gts, aka Aquaphor chic) and I are planning to meet up on Saturday for a little swim / dolphin dive practice, packet pickup and dinner. Not necessarily in that order, and times are up in the air still. Stay tuned for further details!
