After browsing through this thread, boy am I glad I decided to wait till next year to attempt my first HIM instead of tomorrow.

Could I finish if I attempted one tomorrow...likely.  Would it be fun...probably not.  12 more months of hard training and I hope to complete my first HIM with some form of "racing" involved.  Finishing is an obvious goal...but "just finishing" is not really in my vocabulary.

As per the title really, I am trying to gauge an average / semi decent time for where I am at.

1, what was your 1st 70.3 time ?

2, how long had you been training / r?acing before? you ventured into this terr?itory ??

I've only done one "half-IM" event -- Troika in Spokane, WA, back many years (1991, I think?). Anyway, it wasn't a "70.3", as the bike course was 58 miles, if I remember right. It was still called a half-IM (before "IM" was a trademarked name).

I finished in 4:44 and small change.

I'd been doing tri's for several years prior (first one was in 1984), sprint and Oly distance, but had done several half-marathons and many long tour-type rides (RAMROD, Seattle-to-Portland, Double-metric centirues). I ramped up my mileage for that season, and tackled the distance. It was actually a Hawaii-IM qualifier then, and I just barely missed the slot (I think it went to the guy that finished one place ahead of me). BUT... that was definitely long enough for me. While I respect anyone who goes the full IM distance, I still think they're a bit wrong in the head... Wink

5:30.

FWIW, I was completely drained after my first and considered (though for a very short period ) never doing another one.  I did a second one less than a year later in 4:52 and felt extremely good afterwards.

My first HIM was Savageman, ranking #1 ranking in the World's Hardest Triathlons category in the March 2010 issue of Triathlete Magazine. (http://www.savagemantri.org/Bike_Course.html) -- took me 8h 30m

Did Rhode Island 70.3 a few months later. Not totally flat but not too tough -- did it in 6:15. Yup, dropped over TWO hours of off my SM time.

Bottom line, there is not "average/ semi decent" time for a first HIM. It depends on the course, your fitness, and your goals. Make your OWN goals !!

4:57. Don't underestimate the distance. No matter how well trained you think you are on the run, run more. run off the bike. There is no faking a half-mary off the bike.

Different courses, weather, etc. = different results.

Look at the race results from the previous year. Look at what you are doing in training. You can figure out where you will generally finish.

well I just finished in 6:24. First triathlon ever
Previous bike experience, a 6k ride
Previous distance running 10k about 2 months ago
It was tough
Swim okay 40m
Bike a total mare 3:35
Run was always going to be tough 2:10
So I reckon if I work on the bike things should be much easier...felt like someone was pelting my quads with cannonballs on the run following ride.
Here's to preparing next time, but still great experience

First HIM was about a month ago. Musselman tri in Geneva, N.Y. Considered a fairly flat course, first timer friendly. I've done a sprint and an oly distance in each of the last two years. I did not get to build up as much as I would have liked for the HIM with most of my rides being on the trainer and only lasting about 30 minutes. I did a couple of 30 mile rides outside and rode the race course (56 miles) once a couple of weeks before the race. My runs, I did several during the weeks, but my longest run had only been 6 miles. Most of my runs were 3-5 miles. I was aiming for sub 6 hours but considering my training I was realistically telling myself that I should be happy to finish in under 7. I crossed the finish line in 5:52. Actually the race went awesome for me up until about mile 7 of the run (as expected). Started getting major ITB issues and then leg cramps. It was not pretty. Turned into a walk/jog all the way to the finish.

Hoping next year I will be better off. Going to really try to fix up the ITB issues with stability exercises and aim for getting closer to that 5 hour mark, though I'll be on tougher courses next year (thinking Syracuse HIM and the Peasantman HIM).

1. 5.03 at what is now Victoria 70.3
2. About a year off/on, I signed up about 5 weeks out, had never given any thought to racing that far prior to that. I was only 1 year post collegiate swimming at the time however.

PB is 4.41.
Olympic is 2.02/Sprint is 60 flat

My first HIM was 5:05. Age 48 at time of race.

It was my third year of competing in triathlons.

I followed the BT HIM plan and felt great in the race. I stayed in my HR zones and didn't stress about a certain time. I did want to finish under six hours. I took my time in both transitions and didn't push myself too hard on run. I would have pushed a little harder if I knew I was that close to five hours.
