Subject: open water swim practice
I'm looking to do some open water swim practice on Sundays at Hagg Lake starting on 6-13 and going until The Hagg Lake Triathlon on 7-13.  As I'm not a good open water swimmer, so I'd be eager for others to join me.  Any takers?

Also, If anybody knows any other lakes of ponds that are good for swim practice close to TIgard/Tualatin I'd love to hear about them.  Thanks

There is a large group of Portland area triathletes that swim at Kline Line pond in Vancouver ( ya I know it's not close to Tigard or Tualitin but I'm not sure if there are any) on Wednesday nights. We show up there starting at 5 and as late as 7pm. Wednesday nights seems to be the busiest nights, but a group of us has been trying to get there M, W and Friday evenings.

If you google map the address below it should be easy to find.

Klineline is in Vancouver, WA

I'm fairly new to swimming (and to Portland area), is this a beginner friendly group of athletes? I can probably make it out Monday and/or Friday.

Guess I didn't realize Hagg Lake had swimming except for events.  What a great idea to go there and the the kids swim and play while I get a work out in.

Just started swimming laps again last week. I haven't swam like that since JR High and man does it show. So I wold say I am a beginner as well. Breathing is a huge issue right now, or I should say timing on the stroke is an issue.  Anyone have any tips for this??

I have been out there (Swain Creek) swimming on Sunday mornings. Sometimes there are open water swimmers and triathletes. There was a big crowd right before the Hagg Lake OWS. And sometimes there was no one else but me - in the pouring rain last weekend. The OW crowd swims on saturday as well, and sometimes in the middle of the week.

People use a lot of lakes in the area but Hagg is probably the most popular with Silverton second (currently 54 degrees!). Most popular meeting times are 7 am, 8 am & 9 am. It's best before the boats start showing up.

The Klineline Lake training sounds great but I work in Salem so getting there before everybody leaves seems unlikely.

I'm going to be at Hagg Lake, the Sain Creek picinic area at 10:00 AM on Sundays until the Hagg Lake Tri if anybody would like to join me.  It's in the no wake zone portion of the lake and will probably have a lot of people around since the weather is supposed to be 80 (finally!!!).

There is a group OW swimmers that swim at Silverton where the temps were 54 this past weekend. Too cold for me to swim as they do without a wetsuit

I am from the Willamette Valley Tri Club ni Salem, OR and we swim at the Pettit Reservoir right now (by the Oregon Gardens) near Silverton due to the Silverton reservior being so nasty cold right now.  It will warm up, but not until July.  We did not swim last week deu to Blue Lake not sure about this week.  Haven't heard anything yet.  We generally swim on Friday evening at about 6 pm.

There is a mix of experience at Kline Line, from people like me who can't swim for Sh#t to full Iron Man capabilities. We seem to do a good job of sticking together for the most part, swim to a point stop and bob while I and slower swimmers catch up and then off to another point.

Wow, glad I checked here first - my OWS practice partner cancelled on me today so I was going to head over to Hagg to see if I could find you!  Hope you feel better soon, sjw....

If you are still looking to swim at Hagg next Sunday, let me know...I'll join you.  I'm not a fast swimmer, so I need all the practice I can get!  (I'm right down the road from Hagg in Gaston, btw).

Just an FYI

Group Swims are starting in the Willamette this thursday (and every thursday til Portland Tri) at 6pm @ Riverplace Marina in Portland.
As they say "Come and practice your open water swimming skills. Bring a bright swim cap, and some warm weather."

I swam a couple times last year, good fun. However - I wouldn't go near the Willamette right now with a 10 ft pool - after all the rain - and there is too much floating debris from high waters. I've seen some trees floating in there lately - not good to swim with at all, far too easy to get snagged in with the current. Giving it a few weeks to see how the debris field clears, and if no significant rains...

Even though there has been a lot of rain I think I am going ot go check out the willamete swim with the pdx tri people this thursday.  If I see too much debri I just won't swim but I think that is would be good practice no matter what.  Just don't swallow the water!

I was a little concerned about the sewer overflow problems on the Willamette given the heavy rainfall we've had. (Will it never be Summer?!?!)

I was thinking Benson State Park,  east of Troutdale on I-84 would be a good spot too.

I usually swim at Pettit Reservior in Silverton on Friday evenings.  I am not swimming this week due to a commitment and the swim coordinator is out of town.  I haven't seen any other insterest in swimming and didn't want you having to drive all the way to silverton and not be able to swim.  That would be a bummer.  I hope you get this.  I'll check your profile and see if I can send domwthing directly to you as well.

Thanks for the notice and the message.  I'm actually still getting over a bug and didn't think swimming would be the best thing for it.  I'm going to go running instead and see if it helps shed this cold/strep residue.

I do have an interest in swimming at Hagg Lake the next two weekends.  I am trying to see if any of our tri club members want to join me.  Afterwards I plan to do an couple loops around Hagg on the bike as well.  So most likely I will start pretty early in the AM so I am done around 11:00 am or so. I'll let you know if anything arises and maybe you can join us.  Always nice to meet new people.

Do you have any details about times and if this is an organized swim with a cost?

Much appreciated H20.

The core of the OWSs are preparing for an EC relay in a few weeks. There are also a couple of people training for solo channel crossings. And then there are a couple who just like to swim OW. Most people swim early to avoid boating. Arrival times are from 7 am - 8 am. The group varies in size because there are a number of lakes used and Hagg is getting too warm for those training for the channel. The get in spot is at Sain Creek

Most people like to swim with another person, in part because it is just more fun. I swim when I can and don't mind swimming alone. Traditionally everyone is welcome and more than once I have swum along with people who either needed some instruction or just didn't feel comfortable alone. When the water was colder I was in a wetsuit but the rest of the OWSs go naked.

This is a friendly group and not an organized pay kind of thing. Because it is so close in time to some of their channel swims many of the swimmers will not have the time to help you out. If I'm around I'll be happy to swim along with you if you need it. My next swim is a 10K in mid-July. I am only doing OWS this year - no tris.

I was planning on 7 am but as it has gotten later as we speak 7 am is not looking so good right now.
